He created the church of england, which was a pretty big deal. It had significant ramifications for his offspring (i.e. numerous death plots against Elizabeth I, fueding with the Catholic Church & Mary Queen of Scots, etc.)

He also annexed Wales.

Henry VIII: Profiles in Power. by Micheal Graves is a good book that really explains Henry far beyond just his need for a male heir. But why his father presses upon his that need to the extent that latter he seemed more of a mad man that just a king. Also the great work he did building up his fleet so that a generation later his daughter could defeat the Spanish Armada

Henry the 8th had a few problems when he came to power. Firstly, the Catholic church was very powerful. Secondly a lot of wealth and influence was tied up in monastic control.

He could probably have lived with this, like any other Euro leader, if his labedo had not gotten in the way. He wanted a son, but his first wife couldn't give him one. The pope would not sanction divorce and so he set himself up as the head of the Catholic church in England. He went on to champion the Protestant cause and got his hands on all of that gold by destroying the monestaries (See refermation). However, he still wasn't satisfied and, after 7 wives (6 others put to death -cheaper than divorce) he died of sifilice (An STD). Recanted his heracy and repented on his death bed - dying a Catholic.
