Sharia law is highly subjective. It is more of a personal interpretation than a law. That is why you keep hearing about the absurd cases. Someone in power says "I don't like you" and they have the right to have you executed. Most of these absurd cases the defendant never knew that some could have twisted the interpretation so far and are often women who have no rights anyway.

Nigeria 2006: a teenage single mother was given 100 lashes for adultery, even though she argued she was raped by three men. The court said Bariya Ibrahim Magazu could not prove that the men forced her to have sex. [Guardian Unlimited]
We are moaning (and rightly so) because the detention of and charge against the teacher is unacceptable international practice. Furthermore, the naming of the toy is not insulting the religion at all because the name is as common as rain in the Islam world.
We cannot be indifferent to injustice.
"Sharia law" is a matter of interpretation by the country's religious body (court); implemented to varying degrees in different Islamic countries - from the beheadings of Saudi Arabia, to the relatively liberal social mores of Malaysia.

While women of that age can be irritating and wrong-headed, lashing someone with a whip for naming a teddy does seem a little extreme. Mind you, the Sudanese in the North have been slaughtering their own people for ages, and the country was hit by cruise missiles under Clinton for harbouring Bin Laden, so quite why anyone would want to live there is beyond me. Ever heard of Darfor, anyone?

This country does not give people the lash - but there a few I could mention that need it.
The teacher did not name the bear, the kids did. And what`s more, these people still live in the caveman era, but they accept the aid from the UK with open arms (then kill anyone who does not agree with their islamic rule).

People are moaning because she has not broken the law. The children in her class named the teddy bear, therefore technically the children in her class are the ones in the wrong and in any event the bear was named after a pupil in the class not after said deity.

Because been Jailed and having 40 lashes for naming a Teddy bear is insanity. That the average sane mind find's hard to comprehend. We should protect our own when they are been victimised in such a way !!!

Its because no matter what the crime we treat our prisoners with respect and give propotional sentences. We no longer have barbaric punishments that out weigh the crime. Getting 40 lashes will leave the teacher unconsious, with broken ribs, loss of blood, and terrible scars both mental and physical.
Yes you should respect the laws of every country but when the punishment does fit the crime that is when we start to moan.

Although I think is totally unjust and barbaric, I agree with you. If I go to the jungle with no protection and a tiger eats me I can't blame the all tigers for that and an attempt to domesticate tigers is retarded. Ask Siegfried and Roy.

This teacher?
No. I'd say it is good for as much light as possible to be placed on this kind of story. It is important to let everyone see backwards and inappropriate societies so that they may be properly ridiculed, shunned, and face as much discrimination as possible.
