Basically I have all my work software on my pc at home but when I go to my girlfriends house I can't work because all my work related software is at home on the pc which I can't be bothered to carry to my girls house.

Is it possible to clone the harddrive of the pc at my house then put it into the pc at my girlfriends house? She doesn't use the pc and is ok with me doing this. But I want to know if I would be wasting my time. I would prefer to do this instead of bringing all my discs and going through the process of installing allll the software again which would take well over 2 weeks.

What options do I have? I dont mind about having to reinstall drivers etc but the software I don't want to go through that again.

Help is appreciated.

For disk cloning, I use a program called Symantec Ghost. It works very well if the equipment is similar. You might have to tweak it a bit if there are driver conflicts though, if the equipment is drastically different. Hopefully, plug and play and yourdriver software will suffice.

Assuming that you are running Windows XP or Vista....

MS has Windows set up so that when it is installed, it polls ten different hardware items in the PC (the system board, hard drive, memory, video card, etc) and creates a hardware profile that helps it to detect what computer it is running on. If Windows starts and detects that it is NOT running on the correct computer, it will refuse to run.

This is to protect you should your hard drive be stolen. But also to keep you from "stealing" Windows and other software and installing in on another computer by "cloning" the drive.

So, sorry, but you can not clone the drive and run it in a different computer.

You will have to install the software you need manually on your other computer.

(Don't you just love Microsoft!!!) LOL

Basically then you clone your OS to another machine problems regarding drivers incompatibility arise. But there is a way to avoid such difficulties. For this purpose you should use True Image with Universal restore add-on. This add-on uploads all necessary drivers during restore operation. You can obtain more information here:
