My young friend, beyond the fact you want to buy a $3410 bike and you parents won't let you, I really have no idea of what you are trying to say. Perhaps you are having the same difficulty communicating with your parents. The ability to effectivly communicate an idea can not be overstated.

Here is the problem: my kids "want" stuff all the time. But there is a huge difference between wants and needs. As parents, we do our best to get what our children need and a very little bit of what they want. We could afford to give our kids much more, but the fact is, they don't really need the majority of what they ask for.

So here are my questions...

Why do you "need" a $3410 mountain bike? Do you compete? If you compete, is this bike going to take you to the next level of competition? Frankly, I know a lot of racers who are quite successful on less than $3410 bicycles.

How old are you? Are you done growing? I wouldn't even consider an expensive bike for a kid who is still growing.

Are your parents facing other significant expenses for you in the near future? For example, are they going to need to help you buy a car so you can get to work? How much money have you saved for your college education? How much money have your parents saved for your college education? Unless you are a rider with Lance Armstong's potential, you should be thinking about your education before you go get an expensive bicycle.

How often do you come up with other high dollar wants? If this is just one of a series of exensive items you set your heart on, your parents have real good reason to be careful.

I suggest you put some serious thoughts into these questions. Perhaps when you demonstrate to your parents that you have given this mature consideration and can put together a coherent reason for needing this bike they will change their minds.

Hope this helps, even if it doesn't result in you getting the bike.

In my opinion they are right. My first MTB bike was a $650 and lasted over 3 years. After that I switched to a $900 Trek and so on. So make it a gradual thing. I've seen people that go from a Supergo bike to a Dream Bike and end up leaving the bike on the garage after a couple of rides. Go to eBay and take a look. A lot of people buy compulsively and end up selling the bikes for much less.

1) Are you competing?
2) Are you aware that the bike wont make you faster?
3) Does your ridng habilities requires such and expensive bike?
4) Are you aware that a higher end bike requires more maintenance and ussually if a part breaks it is more expensive to replace?
5) How long have you been racing?
6) Do you already have a car?

Think about it!!

I think there is a lot of things going on than just your post. I don't agree completely on the stuff that you don't need a 3K bike.

I think there are several things that your parents might be considering in their decision.

One is that 3K is a lot of money what for most people is a toy. So sometimes overcoming that mental obstacle is difficult to non bikers.

I don't know if you have an agreement with your parents regarding college and other costs. If they're hopping to put money to have you finnish college and they're expecting you to pull your own weight for that, and that buying that bike is reducing the amount you have, then in part they might have a point. If for them paying your college is not a big finnancial issue, and they have already paid your brothers or sisters their complete college stuff, then I think you should be entitled to choose where to spend your money.

Also, if you're still growing, then wait a bit before spending that much money because you will only fit your bike for a short time.

If you have already reached your growth, then also consider how much you're going to use your bike for. If it's only for the eventual weekend, then it's a lot of money. If you're using it as a form of transportation, then maybe buy a lower price bike because on college you don't know if it's going to get stolen.

If it's somehting you want to do every weekend, try to find real justifiable reasons to convince your parents. They have to know that your serious about using the bike, that you will keep working and saving money, etc..

Dang.. $3410? That's a ton of cash for a lot of flash. Seriously. Get something around $800 and you'll have 80-90% of the technology and know-how embedded in that $3410 product. You won't ride any slower. Put Lance Armstrong on any bike and he will still ride like Lance Armstrong. He won't have any trouble whoopin' you on the road.

Good luck. Focus on the miles - not the stickers and price tags.

sfr1224 pretty much has the answer dialed in. I raced a $900 hardtail for years and I could never blame the bike for not winning. Sit on your "want" for 6 months or so, then see how you feel at that time. Many wants disappear with time some don't.

Without any intent on sounding harsh. The answer to "what should i do?" is: Obey your Parents!

You have some maturing to do, as your question is all about what you WANT and how to get around your parents wishes.

You don't really want a 3500 bike. Why? Because everyone will laugh at your poser *** on that bike as you are caughing up a lung. Don't be that guy.

You know they are correct. If you have the money now, put the money in the bank and buy your first car.
