Seems odd to me to "celebrate" love and peacefulness by a somewhat violent action (burning things has usually been used as a tool for hate itself). Their time probably could have been more constructively applied to something that brought about some actual positive change, but whatever.

Ironic. They could have gone around giving people hugs or flowers or buttons that said "No More Hatred".

It also should have been "burn the hatred", not "burn the hate". "Hatred" is a noun, "hate" is actually a verb. I'd expect university students to know that.

Burning anything conjures up disturbing images/memories. Bad method to get a point across.

makes me think of the Muslim tradition of throwing rocks at some stone to supposedly fight off evil - they should be throwing the stones at themselves

ironic. isn't it? i suppose, in their way they, were trying to send a message.i think in the end, they don't make themselves look any better than the haters they were protesting.
