the short answer is simple. we gave up our "civillian" liberties when we swore in, therefore we are no longer civillians, but U.S. Government Property untill our enlistment is over.
we dont cosider ourselves civillians because we dont have the same liberties as they dao. we live our lives by a completely different set of rules, laws, and policies, most of which are goverened by the UCMJ (Uniform Code of Military Justice).
In the civillian world, if you arent where you're supposed to be, or not doing your job, you get yelled at, or possibly fired. if we arent where we're supposed to be, or not doing our job people die.
we're trained, disciplined, and and bonded in a way that most civillians cannot comprehend. we function mostly behind the scenes of everyday life, and its a completely different world. thats one of the reasons that we arent "tagged" as civillians.

It really is an interesting issue...Maybe if there was only civilian society, there would have been no need for the army...The way things stand in this world army is obviously something any state needs...Oh yes and why they can't make part of civilian society ? It is quite obvious army is a very special structure, it is specially designed to respond to any immediate threat imposed by other countries, or which becomes ever more likely by terrorist organizations...As such army needs to have martial laws when they're needed. Generals should off course be supervised by representatives of civilian society, as well as politicians - we all know too well what happens next if crooked politicians join their power with corrupted generals...

I don't understand some of these answers. If you commit a murder off post, you will be tried by the state, not the military. Just because you are in the Army doesn't mean you don't have to abide by civilian law.
Some of these people think less of civilians just because we didn't sign up for the military and I don't understand that either. Many of us are contributing members of society, for example, teachers, firemen, medical examiners. I have respect for everyone!
My husband is in the Army and I am so glad he doesn't have that sort of self-righteous attitude.

I thinky ou are getting the terms citizen and civilian mixed up.
By definition, a civilian is a person following the pursuits of civil life, especially one who is not an active member of the military, the police, or a belligerent group.
So, they are citizens of this great country but not a member of the civilian population.

Because unlike civilians, we manned and womaned up and decided to fight and defend this great country of ours so that the others can sit around and sip coffee at starbucks with co-workers, eat fast food everyday, sit around and do nothing but play video games and sleep, complain because their internet is too slow, and gather in protest over the war in Iraq. Not saying that all civilians are like this, just making a point. Without us, YOU WOULD NOT HAVE THESE FREEDOMS.

Because the word civilians means you are not in the military. We want peace too, trust me nobody enjoys combat. It is sometimes necessary to kill the few that are bad so that the many that are good might have a chance to live in peace.

Because they are Military, and thus are subject to certain rules and regulations that "civilians" are not subject to. You do not have to follow orders from a senior officer, they do. You are an undisciplined sack of meat while they are lean, well trained fighting machines designed to defend this country from all enemies foreign and domestic. You call 9-11. They are this country's 9-11. You are a sniveling little coward who pleads "Please don't hurt me!", while they run into the face of enemy fire and say "Who wants a piece of this?"
The may not be civilians, but in many cases, they are the better citizens. They are willing to put in all on the line for their country.

In the U.S. anyone in the military is under a separate set of laws called the UCMJ. They are much more strict that laws governing civilians and even place limits on Conditional rights, such as free speech.
