So I went ahead and bought my gun. I got a nice CVA Buckhorn .50 Muzzleloader. It's a basic but very useable gun. I am not sure what scope I am going to get. I tried a couple but it didn't work out (mounting issues). I am using Haroday (spelling?) sabots with 777 powder. Now, I am sighting in today and am heaing out the next 3 days. I should be doing well. I am also going out the 15th and 16th.

Wish me luck...any opinions?

Some states, like here in Idaho, want black powder hunting to remain "pure" and will not allow the use of scopes. Be sure to check your local laws first. I did a lot of BP hunting for many years. Just make sure you take your time, follow the basic safety rules, make sure you know the limitations of both your firearm, and your own abilities. CVA has come a long way. In the early years of their production, fit and finish was kind of rough and took a bit if "tweaking" to make them right. Now a days, CVA is a really good product.
Have fun, shoot safe.

Even if it's legal in your state, a scope on a muzzleloader is not necessarily a good idea. I'd recommend a good peep. It's an optical sighting system just like scopes, it won't unbalance the rifle, and it sticks more closely to the idea of front-stuffers. Call me an old fogey, but I like the concept of using a traditional-style rifle with real black FFg and a chunk of lead without a plastic wrap.

Make sure it is legal to use a scope on a muzzle loader. It is not legal in Wisconsin during the muzzle loader season.
