i'm pretty new to real photography and i've just purchased an olympus sp-550 uz. i was wondering is it an SLR camera and if not, what are the differences between them?
also, does anyone if the lens is detachable and replaceable?
i've been trying to read up on the net about it but i get so confused!
thanks in advance

It is not an SLR, but not because of the interchangeable lens thing. SLR refers to Single Lens Reflex.

The SP-550 is a single lens camera; the lens for composing the image is the same lens used to take the photo. However, it does not have a reflex mirror system that swings out of the way when the photo is taken.

So, it's not an SLR.

The lens is not user detachable or replaceable. There are probably screw on filters that will add some magnification or make the lens look wider, but that's not the same thing as having interchangeable lenses.

It is not a DSLR. The lens is not removable.

A DSLR has interchangeable lenses and you look directly through the lens when composing your pictures.

IMO you would do just fine with the Olympus SP-550 UZ.

Konica Minolta do an excellent selection of digital cameras (distinctly the Dimage selection) and underwater housing is actual obtainable for many fashions. I actually have a Dimage myself and despite if it fairly is not strictly a SLR it is in simple terms about just about as good and it takes an excellent photograph. you will desire to purchase diverse attachment lenses for it. i locate it greater helpful than a number of of the different cameras I even have used.

no, it's not.
the lens doesn't come off. so it's not a SLR.
SLR camera has lens that come off and can be replaced with other lens. SLR also has a mirror inside.

it's not a DSLR

DSLRs let you look through the lense via a prism and mirror to see what the actual lens sees

DSLRs save in raw file format as well as compressed

DSLRs have interchangable leneses of higher optical quality

DSLRs have 36 bit color instead of 24 bit color

DSLRS have bigger CMOS or CDS chips
