Do some homework, check out various links and figure out which breed works best for YOU!
So many people feel that just any old dog will do....and for some, its true....but for many more, they get a dog because its cute...and then realize they can't take the time to raise it, train it and pay for it......so please, do your homework and find out which breed fits your lifestyle, budget and home styles.
Here are a few links on various dog breeds.....many have information about each breed, so please...be honest with yourself and the pup, take the time to learn each breed before choosing one on its "cuteness"...and good luck with whatever pup you choose.
Don't forget to nueter him though......it will make things much easier on you..(He won't want to run as much, he won't drive you crazy trying to get out of the house if the neighbor's dog goes into heat...and he will be more mellow.) Unless you plan to use him as a stud.

What ever dog you get, you should walk it about 30 minutes every day for exercise and general health. You alkso want to socialize it with many people and many dogs, so that it will have a calmer personality. Look into Bite Inhibition in previous answers. Getting it fixed is important , also.
Having said all of that, most dogs will work fine. You can go to the local rescue organizations, and the good ones will help you match your home situation to a good dog.
You can also try the local pound, SPCA, Humane Society. You can get a terrific dog for $100 or so, and it can be just as good as an expensive purebred.

Try this link - you answer a few questions and it comes up with some suitable breeds:

Now things to think about - if you want a cute house dog then look for one that doesn't shed much. Do a Google search for this, or for "hypoallergenic dogs". Poodles or poodle mixes, maltese, Shihtzus etc. Only problem with these dogs is you need to brush daily and get them professionally groomed often. Smooth, short coats are good but will still shed quite a bit.
Chihuahuas are cute but can be aggressive, same with Pomeranians and Yorkie Terriers. Any sort of terrier will be very active! Pugs or pug mixes are lovely.
We have rescue maltese x poodles and they are just wonderful. Non-destructive, friendly, playful and cute. Perfect house dogs.
Defintely get your dog desexed at an early age if you want a male - otherwise he will mark everything!
Goodl luck and enjoy :)

For a small dog I love MinPins, I have 4 currently and have owned and rescued many. IMPS, www.minpinrescue.org, has MinPins all over the USA and a few in Canada. Evaluate your current lifestyle plus your future plans, kids, job change, moving to a colder/hotter locale. You need to thing into the next 12 yr future.

for a good easy training and family dog you should get a golden retriever!!
i have two of them ..one male and one female and they are the best dogs i have ever had!
if you dont like that breed then try getting an australian shepherd.. i heard that it is one of the smartest dogs ever..

If you want a happy and friendly dog, a lab would be best choice. Never met one that didn't love everyone at first sight.
