The soldier at 5:05 is firing some sort of machine gun from the hip; any ideas what it might be?

Thanks!

For a little background these are mercenaries fighting in 1960s Congo. The soldier I am referring to can be seen a few seconds earlier, the second man to run down the dirt path.

It's most likely to be of US, UK or maybe German/ Russian origin I would have thought.

Conranger1---It is NOT the .303

It is one of the variations of the M1919 Browning Machine Gun, not sure exactly which one, can't tell because of the limited view, Possibly the M1919A4. If you want the proof, check out this link.

Unfortunately I can't pull up the link but I'll dive in anyway.

You could not fire a Browning .50 cal from the hip. The recoil would take the weapon from you with the first round or 2. The .50 cal rifles you see are single shot, with special muzzle recoil buffers. They are not designed to take the heavy abuse of auto fire.

We had them mounted in our CH-53s in the Corps. When the gunners fired just one, the whole aircraft shook. That's 32-40,000 lbs of aircraft. I can only imagine the WWII fighters that had 6 of those things mounted in the wings, and the noise and shaking that went on when they fired. It would actually slow the aircraft in flight.

Yeah its the 303 browning machine gun, baby brother to the .5

of course its possible to use it like this but you are no way going to be accurate, it was originally designed to be fixed on a tripod or on a vehicle, in fact in the clip you can here the command bring it down from there gunner and the soldier dismounts it from the mount on the vehicle.

Congo? Automatic weapon? 1960s?

It must be a Thompson submachine-gun.

BTW, the guy in the picture, his name is Roland.

Browning Automatic Rifle
you need strong arms to fire that on the move.

cant tell.....

maybe a BAR or a 50 cal.

i think it's a mounted 50 cal being carried with a strap.

(the ones you see mounted on trucks and tanks etc. not the usual foldable muzzle support legged type carried by infantry)

hell i dont know.
