That would be age discrimination, and they can not do that.

I've seen a few become officers in their 30s, and one in his 40s.

Depends on the department. I know of one officer who finally retired at age 73. I paid a visit to my old academy and an instructor pointed out one fellow there who was 60 years old and doing the whole academy stretch.

Generally speaking, though, most departments want someone who can do 20 to 30 years with them. So cut off ages in the middle thirties are most common.

Lots departments used to put caps on people in their 30s, but many of them have been sued and been forced to drop that requirement. One local major department still has that age cap, but if someone threatens a lawsuit, they just make an "exception" for them.

I'm not sure how old is too old. We had a guy in our academy class that was 49 (50 at graduation) and he did fine.

The last 3 officers hired at my dept have been in their early 40's and are fine officers.

That would be Age Discrimination
if that's done.

It's based on the ability to do the job.
There is alot to know, and the job is
very physical.
That could be the reasons for not
making it.

It is all about pensions and having enough room to put in you 20 years...which you won't be able to do when your say 50 or 40.
