Well don't shoot them, or if you do drag the body in the house. In california, the only time you can shoot a bugalar is if they are in your home. Even your garage doesn't count.

Seriously though, I would try setting up a neighborhood watch. It won't stop the problem, but it can help to at least lessen it, if not maybe catch a few people in the act. Also, remember to lock your doors (sounds obvious, but you'd be suprised how many people forget this simple act.) Oh and don't keep anything in your car. Even a sweater or jacket can lead to a break in. Try to remember to bring all of your belongings in with you every day.

Do you park your car in your driveway? Or at least in front of your house? If thats the cast leave your porch light on. And try to set up motion detector lights in front of and around your house. These are cheap, and simple to install. And many criminals want as little attention as possible drawn to them, so it will stop most of them.

You have received good suggestions. Surveillance is probably the most feasible.

Yet, here are a couple of thoughts you may want to consider:

Get a dog. Dogs bark. Crooks don't like attention (or getting bit).

Load up a shotgun with rocksalt and wait. Then pepper the culprit's backside when he tries something. I actually have done this once when a kid down the road from me kept siphoning gas from my cars. When my son informed me that the neighbour's boy had a sore rump, I knew who it was.

Step 1: Move to Texas
Step 2: Wait for burglar(s)
Step 3: Shoot burglar(s) in face

There are probably other states that would work in.

Well since it is San Jose...I am assuming you have alot of the same "type" of people trying to steal from you....this worked for my brother, and he never saw another one of "those" people in his yard again.

So here it is...in large letters on a sign out front, write the words "Help Wanted" and you will never see another one again. ;)

The way I see it there are three easy options:
1. Lock n Load (my favorite)
2. set up survaillence, so at least they can't hang around your neighborhood anymore even if you can't catch them since you'll know their face
3. booby traps (this one's a little harder to pull off and can hurt innocent people so take caution)

set up a surveillance camera and try to catch whoever it is. I can almost guarantee that its the same person every time, and its someone who lives close by and knows what you have in your car.

Write a letter to your councilman. It would blow your mind how quick that will get attention on patrol.
