Does it have to be such a drag? Can I simply decide to change my nasty ways, or do I have to go through some horrendous ordeal first?

I'm not sure where the practice of "flogging one-self" came from, but no you do not have to flog yourself, pay penance, etc. You just have to be sincere (The Bible says that God will never reject a sincere and humble heart).
To get a bit techinical the Biblical word for Greek in the New Testament is: meta' noia (meta- like metamorphosis for change) and noia (mind- kind of like knowledge)... So when we repent it just means that we have a change of mind and that our will matches what God's will is - clearly shown to us in the Bible.
For a person who has accepted Jesus, the Bible tells us that He is the mediator between man and God and so you can go directly to God in the name of Jesus to ask for forgiveness. Romans also tells us that it is the kindness of God that brings us to Repentance- so it's God's kindness not a terrifying, threatening angry God that brings us to repent for our nasty ways.

The word repent means to change your ways and to stop doing what you were previously doing. NO you do not have to flog yourself, you do not have to tell anyone but Jesus, and you can talk directly to him. See when Jesus died on the cross the curtain to the Holy of Holies tore open and that curtain was over 18 inches thick. This was God's way of telling us that we could come directly to the throne to talk to him to confess our sins. Jesus had paid the price and made anyone that accepted him as savior as white as snow; so we have clear access to the throne. It is a great deal, you get to call your savior friend, Lord, Brother, Family, God, and Father Almighty. I love that the very one that could condom me has decided to call me his friend instead. Isn't that the best?!

Jesus does the changing
All you have to do is Turn it over To God
Preachers cant change you
Church cant change you
Jesus can change you
