Unfortunately, the check engine light will come on for many possible reasons. With your mileage, it could be anything from a bad O2 sensor, map sensor, timing sensor or many other things. Fortunately, you can take the vehicle to a dealership or good reputable garage and ask for an engine diagnostic to be run. This will tell what is going on and why the check engine light is on. Most shops will deduct the cost of the diagnostic if you get the repairs done then. Good luck.

1992 Maxima will not be OBD2 emissions you might have to see your dealership to properly diagnosis the cause of the check engine light Your next question my engine shakes and over heats. Don't drive to the service department until you look at new Nissan cars. I will warn you again there is not many inexpensive repairs a technician can do at 200,000+ miles. Engine light means there is a misfire or something wrong that could cause excessive emissions.

I assume you meant to say your check engine light came on???
I had that recently on my 1993 Toyota tercel and it was the oxygen sensor had become disconnected. Take it to mechanic (not a dealership, they'll charge a fortune) and ask them to check the oxygen sensor to see if that's the problem.
If that's not it they will probably be able to figure it out quick.
Ask your friends/co-workers who they take their cars to, as that's usually a good way to find a reliable mechanic. Do not allow anybody's brother, etc. to fix it as you wont have any warranty on the work that is done.

Check you O2 sensors first as well as the mass air flow sensor if your car has one that usually is the cause.
