Improve your physical fitness is most important. Learn to take orders without hesitation and when asked who want to do whatever, step forward and take the task, this shows leadership ability.
Get a copy of the General Orders and memorize them, you will be asked to cite them often.

Now as to some of the idiots who answered here:

Jack, you obviously know jack about Di's, you think they would back down if a recruit gave them ****, ha you are soooo wrong. But I guess it's because you know nothing about the military.

Psychede: You too are obviously a wanna be. Your facts are wrong! Besides, I have personally had to take my squad into harms way because the 1stAirCav had fled posts in I Corps. Not to mention the FACT that when the brass decided to pull the Marines from a hill top outpost that was fought over for months on end and the Marines never let the NVA take it, they sent the Army in to take over, well guess what, not only did the Army flee within the first 2 weeks, they left behinds all weapons and munitions, now that's a stupid move.
Also explain why the Army has the highest desertion rate and it's growing day by day.

In closing my hats off to you for joining the proudest military orgainization and hope you do well in boot camp. Remember their are many who wish they could be Marines and many who couldn't be Marines.

I think you've got a great start already. Just study the history, make sure you know the ranks, pretty much anything Marine Corps related, also, remember to be strong mentally during boot, they will deff try to break you down. Oh! And make sure you can do lots of pull ups....they like those.
Thank you sooo much by the way. :)

Try to learn the real history instead of the crap the Marine Corps puts out 'official history'.

For example, read up on the 31st RCT in the Chosin Reservoir. The Armys 31st Infantry regiment blocked a PLA Army Group for 5 days so the 1st Marine Division could retreat, and gave all in doing so. Afterwards the Marines told the families of the dead 31st soldiers that they were cowards who broke and ran. They maintain that crap to this day.

That would not be the first (or even the thirty-first ;-), example of the Marines taking all credit and eschewing all blame for a battle they were involved in.

The Marines and the Army do the same job on the ground. If your karma and character will allow you to be be part of the largest group of buddy-******* every assembled, by all means, join the Marines. If such things give you a pang of doubt, consider the Army -- same job, better karma.

You're doing everything you can do right now.
Enjoy the Holidays , and spend what time you can with your family and friends. Feb will be here soon enough.
Did you get your orders yet? California PI??

I think your on a great roll.
I'd also research which field you'd like to go into...like infantry or the like. And what you can do to get into OCS.

Good luck!! Oorah!
[I come from a family of many, many Marines, so they are all near and dear to my heart.
p.s. You chose the best branch, I think!]
God speed.

Don't take any crap from the DI's. They can dish it out but they can't take it themselves! Give it right back at them every time! After a while they will leave you alone, because they know you're not going to take their crap!

do as you're told, as quickly as possible, and try not to bring too much attention to yourself.
