I am joining the Coast Guard, and I already have my associates degree. Anyway, I was wondering what is life like there? How are the people? When they do the security background check before you join, do they give you a lie detector test? Is it a somewhat easy job? Please, no smart *** answers..Thank you

Some good, some not so good, answers here already.
No it won't be easy. Your recruiters will do a basic background check on you before you attend boot camp. Depending on what rating you choose in the Coast Guard, they will perform an additional, more complete background check (this is only if the rate you pick requires a security clearance). There are no polygraph exams in the U.S. Military, at least not for enlisting.
With an Associates Degree, you will enter as paygrade E-3.
To the Marine who suggested you put in an Officer package, nice try. To be an Officer you must hold a Bachelor's Degree.

I have been looking into also entering a branch of the services. I have chosen the Army though now. But I had previously looked into Coast Guard, I have a few things on my background one of which was Public Intoxication just 2years ago at the age of 25. They ran my check and it was there, but they said that it was fine. So I doubt you would have any issues with that. But I suggest directing that question to a Recruiter. They are really alot more helpful than most think. Good Luck!!!!

If you have an AS or AA make sure you get the officer package because you dont want to go enlisted unless you really want to hate yourself later. Cant answer specifics about the Costies but I can tell you the military is usually a close nit group that you will never forget and yes that even goes for our blue boys here at home. No, there is never a lie detector test involved for security clearances. At least I never had one.

A somewhat easy job? Did you watch the movie "The Guardian"? With Kevin Costner......yes, they were rescue swimmers, but I don't think that being in the Coast Guard is going to be an easy time.

In the military, which includes the coast guard, there are no "somewhat easy jobs"
You are a coast guardsman first, and the training is just as vigorous as for any other branch of the military.

Try and see if you can become a Officer since you have an Associates. Depending where you are stationed and what your job dictates how your Coastie life is going to be like. I wouldn't consider the job is easy but I would say their is a certain level of routine. You'll get used to it. Lie detector.... not to my knowledge.

Just to clarify, you need a BACHELORS degree to be an officer. An AS doesn't count.
