I want to join it because it seems they push you the hardest, and work you the most. But I'm English living in Canada, and was just wondering if i could.

Yes, you can.

People join the U.S. Army and Marines from all over the world. You'll have to earn your citizenship in order to re-enlist. but Service to America (especially in Iraq) is a quick way to earn your U.S. Citizenship.

You don't have to become a U.S. Citizen if you don't want to, but you won't be able to re-enlist at some point if you don't.

You need either a Green Card that grants permanent residence or citizenship.

Apply for a Green Card with the USCIS - but be warned, there's a massive waiting list, fees to be paid and a lot of demand. Chances increase substantially if you have a close relative who's a citizen, or if you have some sort of skill or expertise.

But once one is granted, you can head straight across the border, find short term accomodation and apply straight away.

Still, if it's challenge you want, you're probably better off applying for the elite commando units of the Royal Marines back in the UK.

Just go to the Consulate or the Embassy nearest you and sign up. You will need to satisfy 'green card' work visa requirements though.

But why Marines? Join the Army -- same fighting, less brainwashing.

Technically, yes. You'd probably be a native of Puerto Rico, though. I had a friend in the Navy who came to boot camp from PR, and the first English word he learned was "Drop!" True story. :)
