Some of them are beautiful and should definitely be kept as landmarks (St Patrick's in NYC). Others (most megachurches, which are incredibly ugly) can be made into rec centers or the land could be sold and made into parks or developed into residential areas.
Honestly, there will always be people in churches, there won't be too too many abandoned churches around the country.

why are you thinking churches will be abandoned? Most churches are filled to the brim. Lakewood Church here in Houston renovated and uses the Rocket basketball team's old stadium that holds approx. 15,000 people. They have 3 services that fill it up each time on the weekends. There are many other large churches like this, so i think your concept is really just wishful thinking.

Oh, how I wish the megachurches could be put to better use as suggested in this thread. One guy had a good point that some churches would be kept as landmarks, but pretty much anything would be better than one of those big freakin' behemoths.

They make great preschools and daycares, thats why so many churches run daycares in the week. they have kitchen, multiple rooms... etc...
also they would make a good shelter, community center, parking. some old churces on our streets have been turned into shops (very small ones)
And one was turned into a Call Center, and one a Car dealership.
They'll sell like any other peice of real-estate.

Homeless shelters, without a doubt. There is a serious lack of them. Depending on loacation, I would suggest detox/rehabs also - especially methadone clinics which are closing left and right. Ironically doing what the churches said they would, but didn't - saving the meek.

I think thats jumping the gun just a bit. Christianity if fairly old, as is the belief in no God. I don't think your going to empty out many churches. Nice try though.
taa-- haha the church I used to go to was in an old bowling alley. Weird.

I agree, homeless shelters.
At least these churches would actually be doing something good for a change.
