I think this law is completely ineffective and very unfair.
The lawmakers, and I understand this, wanted to avoid children being abused. This was NOT, however, the way to do it.
Yes, beating your child is definitely wrong. Spanking, however, is not, and they are two ENTIRELY different things. Spankings are mere slaps on the rear, they MIGHT leave a red mark that fades in a minute or two, but that's only if they're REALLY hard. It's just enough to get the kids attention so they listen to you lecture - that's what they're for. The kids know that if they don't pay attention to you, they'll get a spanking - it's an incentive for the kid to listen to their parents' lessons.
Every kid I know who DID get spanked as a kid, myself included, turned out very well behaved. Almost every kid who wasn't spanked is and was the type of kid who disrespects their parents at every turn, bosses their parents around, and thinks the rules of life are mere suggestions.
Spanking is not a punishment when used properly. It is a way to startle a child into paying attention when you're trying to teach them. Not spanking a child simply means their mind is more likely to wander when you're trying to tell them to eat their vegetables, be polite, and follow the rules of the household.
The problem is that most people do not see this gray area, lawmakers included (and ESPECIALLY the voters). Their mentality is that if you're for spanking, you must be for abuse. It's that kind of thinking that gets you in trouble. Yes, spank your children to get their attention. No, do not beat your children until they're afraid of you.

As long as you know your limitations, I don't see a thing wrong with spanking a child. Both my husband and I were both spanked as children and we turned out to be responsible adults with no "adverse" side affects. I think that there are many cases that a child warrants being spanked. But there are also those that take things way too far and those people have control issues. So, in those cases, it is probably better to let someone more stable spank your child, even if it winds up being at school. However, so many parents raised heck about school spankings, that is almost a thing of the past. But I am a firm believer in spankings when they are needed to make a child behave.

Just another example of government taking rights away from the individual. I'm not even a huge supporter of spanking as punishment but I do believe that parents have a right to an individual choice about raising their own children. There are already laws on the books that protect a child from abuse. Our nation already has the biggest prison population per capita in the entire world. Things are out of control. People in other countries have marched in the streets over less. Apathy will be the downfall of our "free" nation. Personal responsibility is the burden of the individual, not the government. It makes you wonder what's next when it comes to laws. How far will they try to infringe on our freedoms.
Wake up America!

I totally agree with shawn. The bible says you can spank your children, but not the government. THen there is someting wrong right there! I was spanked as a child, and I am still doing very well, and I learned by my spankings.

I think it's overly intrusive and basically a way of persecuting poor people. There are already laws against child abuse. What purpose is served by prosecuting parents for spanking? How does that help the child? It doesn't. Now they are going to regulate parenting? Perhaps well meaning, but FAR overreaching.

Its BS, there is nothing wrong with spanking your child, just as long as it is not taken too far that a child would get seriously hurt.
The people who made that law are soft and are fags.
I was spanked as a child and because of it, i know the difference between right and wrong, and i learned that when you do bad things there are consequences

It's ridiculous. My brother and I were spanked and we are fine. I spank my kids when needed. I worked at the boys and girls club when I was in high school, and the worst kids there turned out to be the ones that were not spanked by their parents. It shows the child that there are consequences for their actions. But no matter, parents will do what is necessary behind closed doors.
They want to take away spanking, but when the kid kills a teacher and some class mates they ask what the parents did wrong in the parenting.

I think its dumb. Spanking can be very useful. It just seems that there are a lot of people who cant control their emotions and turn it into abuse. In that respect, I guess it is good that these laws are starting to be passed. But what about the people who use it appropriatly and do keep their emotions in check?

i think it was put into place for adults who have severe anger issues and don't just "spank" but they beat their kids and injuire them and break their bones...
a spanking never hurt anyone, but i can tell you from personal experience, it's not fun being thrown into walls by the hair, or having your face smashed into the floor, having your arm broken, thrown around and crashing into a coffee table leaving a spine injury -- i could go on all night....
some people don't know the difference between a spanking, and abuse.... or when to issue punishment, either.. i used to be beaten up just because my father was in a bad mood....

Nah mate.
It's an American law.
I'll spank my child as much as is needed.
If my child drops cloths allover the laundry, he's going to help clean it.
If my child switched on the stoves at night, he's going to get spanked. It depends on the alternatives that lead to him/her learning. Spanking reserved for 2nd last.
