will i still be able to play ps3 games on it? i know this is a stupid question and i should know this already but sadly i dont... will it be added as an icon on the XMB? thanks

Yes, you will, as previous answerer said - when you'll turn it on - PS3 will ask. Remember, all your personal data, saves, etc. will be erased, when you'll install different OS, make sure you make a backup!

If you install a new OS on your PS3.
You can access both operating systems when you turn it on.
The linux doesnt show up as an XMB icon.
