Yes, if you meet the filing requirement. If you can be claimed a dependent by your parents (or someone else), then your filing status is Single Dependent.
For Single dependents, you must file a return if any of the following apply.
• Your unearned income was more than $850.
• Your earned income was more than $5,350.
• Your gross income was more than the larger of: $850, or Your earned income (up to $5,050) plus $300.
• Your self employed income is $400 or more.

No, if your mom meets the requirements to claim you, then you aren't allowed to claim yourself. If you file claiming yourself and she also claims you, you'll just generate a lot of IRS paperwork for her and for yourself, and you'll end up having to pay back that extra money anyway, plus interest and penalties. If you lived with her for over half the year, and didn't provide over half of your own support, she can claim you. And on $1200, you didn't provide over half of your own support. Ignore what your friends are telling you. Doing what they suggest will just cause problems for you and your mom. And actually, with an income of $1200, you wouldn't even get any extra money. If you had anything withheld for federal income tax (box 2 of your W-2), that's what you'd get back whether you could claim yourself or not.

Your mom probably needs to claim you. She gets a big exemption for each dependant. And while 1200 seems like a lot, she spends more than that on you when you need a few fillings in your teeth. And the electricity you use for your computer, which she probably bought. And the water for your looooong showers. And the gas to heat your house to keep you snuggly warm. And your clothes, and hair cuts, and doctors appts., and insurance, and etc. etc. Now, if I'm wrong, and your mom is a deadbeat, my appologies, and claim yourself. But in most case, dependant children who live at home on their parent's dimes do not claim themselves.

If you have income, you can. If you have income from self-employment over $399, or income from a job over $5350, you are required to file a return.
