I'm droping dishnetwork and going to cable just wanted to see if it could do it so i don't have to buy one.

Forget it....it NEEDS an Incoming signal to RECORD on the DVR and most likely DISH is going to LOCK the recorder and MAKE YOU SEND IT BACK !!

Unless you want to be billed for about $200......

They make all their clients send back the reciever AND the LNB outside....they send the packing box free though.

You cannot.

Unlike Tivo which records things like a VCR, the Dish systems dont actually record the video and audio. They record the satellite data onto the hard drive. And it only understands how to record things based on the Dish program guide.

Without the service, the box is kind of useless. See if you can sell it back to them for $50.
