Yet they want you to give them respect first. They yell, curse and don't care about anyone but themselves.

It just makes what past generations of this nation have fought and died for e.g. civil rights, fair housing, freedom of speech, fair wages, women's rights was all for nothing. Yet the young people will stand in line for the latest gadget for days. How did this happen.

What you are saying makes no sense at all! I don't have to listen or have respect for you because you are old. But want you want me to have respect for you because you are young and watch YouTube. Remember the generations before you paved the way for you to have the leisure lifestyle you have become accustomed to. Smart please, other countries surpass us in education, health and show more respect for for their citizens-young and old.

I know I won't get best answer 'cause this isn't what you wanna hear but...
Actually, in contrast to nearly everyone else answering this, I believe it's simply because times are changing. Adults now-a-days grew up in the old world, where it was expected that respect was always given, etc. You know the rules
Most kids nowadays don't connect with that sort of "trust". Take me for example, my step-dad for some reason thinks I should respect him, and I used to. That was until I realized he's ******* useless, an idiot, and abuses his perceived notion that he deserves respect. He doesn't listen to me, even when I prove all his stupid statements illogical. He simply responds in a fury "YOU'RE THE KID YOU SHOULD JUST SAY OK MOM, OK DAD." which to me, an actual intellectual (remember also, high school education is nonsensically advanced compared to when you oldies grew up) is...well nonsense.
In short, times have changed, kids nowadays are too mature and biased by some notion of "fairness" to be forced into old social norms that seem to only benefit old farts.
In conclusion, kids see the whole 'Respect me for no reason other than that I'm old' as illogical, unfair, and to no general gain.
We're different.

Because American parents are soft.
Beat your kids! Hah...
seriously, you've got to teach them respect from a young age and a 2 year old won't understand why you're yelling at them but a little "slap" on the hand lets them know they've done wrong.
American parents are soft and can't do that.

You really need to take on a new mindset, from the answer you gave me and this question, I can only gather you are a very ignorant person. I was the same but now, I try not to be and am always open to others opinions (not saying that I always agree with them).
I'm sixteen, and if I can be a more open minded person than yourself, that says something.

People in our generation (I call it that because I'm 23) were brought up in a version of society where the focus is on self-worth, self-confidence, and self-esteem. The downside to that is that we were never properly taught to respect others. Parents in our generation for the most part were so worried about kids growing up depressed or feeling worthless that they fed them stuff like "you can do anything if you put your mind to it" and "you're special" and "you're perfect just the way you are" when it isn't true. Teachers make accommodations for kids who are improperly instructed in things like politeness, behavior, and temper-management and attribute their inadequacies to things like broken homes, false ADHD diagnoses, or a possibly made-up incident of abuse from when they were 3 years old.
This generation is the "me" generation, and everyone around my age expects the world to bend to their needs. Why? Because our parents told us we were special, we were perfect, and we could do anything when it wasn't true. Once our generation gets out of college, they're in for a rude awakening. The world does not cater to us, they discover. And that just pisses them off.
They do not say "please" or "thank you" as they believe they are entitled to whatever they are given. They do not apologize for their mistakes - they instead believe it is YOUR fault if you do not accept them for who they are.
Everyone in this generation is convinced that the rules do not apply to them. They do not realize that society has unwritten laws about kindness and respect that they MUST follow for society to be productive.
Oh well.

I blame parents. Teach respect and it will be given. And theres the argument that the child knows better...Well if respect was never taught, how could they know how to give respect?

This is a pretty judgemental statement. Maybe you should meet some more young people. You might find not all of them are as disrespectful as this. Befriend some young people. I know many junior high age children that were very surprisingly well-behaved.

ask the so called teachers they've been listening to for all the years they've been in school. you know, the ones that told them they're individuals and don't have toi listen to their parents, and if your parents hit you ,tell us and we'll have them arrested. did you ever realize, the school has your kids for 8 hrs. a day while you have them from 2 to 4 hrs. the schools created this monster and now they want to blame the parents. and it cost us BILLIONS to achieve this, amazing, isn't it?

It's because parents are not demanding respect from their children anymore. They are trying to be their friends instead of parents! If you don't demand and expect to get their respect, you won't get it! Actually, they are not doing their kids a favor..they are ruining them...

Because parents aren't allowed to beat their children.
If a kid did something bad and his dad cracked him across the face then maybe they would learn something.
