1). Linux Yellow Dog is an alternative Operating System for PS3 (much like windows for PC);
2). It's free;

4). Yellow Dog was developed for PS3, however other Linux OS can be installed, but it's a bit tricky. Even Win XP can be installed on top of the Linux, but it'll be unstable, run slow and you won't be able to play windows games, since PS3 doesn't support DirectX.
5). No, you can't replace original PS3 browser, but if you'll install Linux - you'll be able to use it's browser (only when Linux is launched);
6). Original PS3's OS called XMB (X-ross Media Bar).

I think that the PS3 is just as good as xbox 360 but xbox live is a little better but i thinks since the ps3 live is free i go with PS3
