does are social animals .. they greet other members of the pack by rubbing against one another .. have you ever seen a dog appear to clean another dogs teeth .. it's a way of showing respect for the higher ups in the pack

It's a sign of love and affection. My two lick each other all the time, and us as well. Although they don't generally lick our faces (we discouraged it because a lot of people don't like having dogs lick their faces), sometimes they do (generally in the mornings).
I love my dogs very much, and I love getting kisses from them. It's also a sign of respect to the 'higher ups' in their social pack.

Melissa got it right, actually. It is a show of respect, and in a dog's way, affection. Their mothers do this to them when they are young to strengthen the bonds of the "pack". They do this to their pack leaders, to show that they respect them.

Your dog is showing submisssion to your authority. He is, in essence, "sucking up to the boss". He is also, however, challenging your authority with agressive behavior.
If your dog is a puppy, he will grow out of it. Such behavior in a full-grown dog needs to be nippped in the bud. Your dog should always consider you the leader of the pack.
