i need something to keep her in while we go out.... right now, she's got run of the house, and she's managed to chew up every pair of shoes she can find, a truck load of socks, and a couple of ball caps.... not to mention all the toys that my two daughters leave laying around. if i leave her out in the back yard, she digs under the 6 feet tall privacy fence, and under the little electric fence that we put down the around the bottom to keep our former pets from digging out. the neighbor has cats, so it is a problem if she gets out.
what is the best kind of cage/pen?

I used wire ones when my boys where young. ( they don't do that stuff anymore)

the thing with wire ones is dogs who dig..and want out bad enough can bend and get out or even open the doors....so the fix is large clips like on leashes (hardware store) clip top and bottom and another poster before had said about useing bungle cords on the top, as she knew a dog the hung itself trying to get out. Also collars in a crate is a no no.

the air crates are a pain to clean in the dog 'goes' in it, and they cost more, some dogs don't like them.

you don't want one to big or to small. the dogs should have enough room to stand/sit without its head touching the top. and long enough nose to tail.

best bet a medium sized one for a beagle.

petedge.com has them for a good price.

You are going through what I went through with my Chi/Rat Terrier, Beagle and two Pit puppies. I have a dog door so they have run of the house.
You have to make your house puppy proof. Put everything up where she can't get to it. Close all the bedroom and bathroom doors. Secure the garbage can. Teach your kids to put up their things up. This will be harder then teaching the dogs. My grandson could never put things up so I had a bunch of remotes and phones chewed up and as you say ball caps, shoes and socks. Anything in reach belongs to the pup. Fill the house with bones and toys they can chew on. The one thing you have going for you is after they get yelled at and get older it will stop. My older dogs don't get into anything any more, now it is only the 5 month old Pit and the four year old Beagle. If any food is left any where that the Beagle can get to it, he will. No food left on the table as he will jump up and get it. He is a chow hound as you probably know.
Bottom line is if they get into something it is my fault. I would never pen my pups up. There are my family.

My Beagle use to do that till I read much info that there was too much room for him and it was overwhelming. There for it just made him destructive. So I bought a crate big enough for him to stand in, lay full out and turn around in. Once I got the crate and put my Beagle in there when going out the house was in one piece, I was happy but most of all my Beagle was happy and felt safe. He has not hesitation going in the kennel. Just make sure you leave your Beagle in the kennel for the required amount of time. Most of all do not use it for bad behavoir only good like when you are going out or it spells trouble. Also start off the crate training with 2hrs then over night and soon you should only leave the dog in the crate for a maximum of 4hrs. Any longer is just cruel to the dog. Good luck!!!! I leave my Beagle no longer than 4hrs when I am gone some where if I am gone some where longer than 4hrs I take the crate with me sometimes or in my truck I have a dog gate and take my Beagle with me.

You can get an outdoor run - it looks like a big rabbit hutch with an enclosed kennel bit at one end and caged end at the other. But you would need the room and it would be $$$. The crate could work too or just put her in your bathroom / laundry with toys and plenty of chewie things. Make sure she gets a lot of exercise before and after and plenty of time with the family. If you wear her out a bit beforehand (eg throwing a ball or whatever) they she'll probably sleep quite happily. Some dogs like a TV or radio going in the background.

I leave my 2 dogs in the laundry when I'm out and they love it. They have the whole laundry plus the toilet - I put paper down in the toilet area and if they need to relieve themselves they go in there.

Sounds like your beagle has plenty of energy!!

I have a beagle mix. She's quite a bit larger than a purebred (55lbs and 27 inches high at the shoulder) but she behaves exactly like your dog if left alone with run of the house.
I prefer the wire dog kennels with a removable bottom. They also have giant plastic kennels which offer more privacy. Just make sure she has enough room to stand up and turn around in, and make sure she has some toys to occupy her time.

Oh my God this sounds exactly like MY beagle!!! After I realized how distructive she is, I now keep the bedroom doors (she ripped apart my sheet, comforter and mattres) and the bathroom doors (toilet paper) closed. I gated off the living room and my office (she tries to read my mail!!) so now she only has the kitchen and the hallway while I'm gone. I put a nice blanket on the floor for her and some bones and toys, (you have to make sure she stays busy), and she's very happy.
Although I have to make sure nothing in the kitchen is within her reach as well.

I'd suggest one of the airline crates.. My beagle destroyed 3 very nice new wire cages .. (I spent about $100 on each).. it took him 10 minutes to get out of them, and he completely destroyed them to do it.. The airline ones don't bother him that much though..

As for the chewing.. do you walk it a lot?.. Mine stopped the chewing when I started walking him 3 miles a day and/or rollerblading with him..

Large wire cages are good, but they need to be large enough for to your pet to be comfortable for longer periods of time,
Laundry rooms, or even a bathroom, also work good for penning a pet in.

Get a dog crate that is big enough for her to stand up in and keep pup inside.

as large a wire crate as you can fit in your space would be best .. however you have to make sure that you are exercise her properly before and after she is crated or your in for a lot more trouble than your preventing ... this I know from experience
