there is this thing at my school, and there will be like speakers from different colleges talking to "colored" people, as they like to call it, about the different programs they have and stuff. it's called the "students of color conference," and they assume that the "colored" people can't get into a certain college and won't get accepted. so yeah. im not sure what to think about this, everyone is saying it's racist?
im half filipino and half white.
just to let you know...

my school's in washington, and is it really like this? are you not as "qualified" as white people to be in colleges. should i go?

it's washingtono state, and i talked to my dad about it and he said he doesn't understand why they do that and that i don't have to go if i don't want to.... he doesn't understand why i was in it because it doesn't matter what color your skin is to get into colleges- im not even that dark! not even very tan!- it matters on how your tests results are.... but i have decided im not going.

I don't know if you are in Washington DC or Washington state, but I live in the South and if a school did something like that here it would lead the national news. In my opinion most of the racism we see now is what used to be called reverse racism and the racism I am talking of is not just black/white it is all forms of discrimination. All people should have the opportunity to pursue their dreams, but no one should be denied that opportunity.

I do not like it. I think people should be accepted to college because they have worked hard, studied, learned and made good grades. Their grades, ACT or SAT scores reflect it and they are so goal oriented that they will apply and be accepted based on the fact they EARNED it. In the past, schools did not want minorities but those days are over. I think it is wrong to single out the black people to have a special program. How about just a student program to make sure EVERY qualified candidate gets into the college of their choice.

This is extremely racist. First of all, the term "colored" is no longer used. It's been pretty much rejected much like "third world countries." It's nice that the school offers a diversity program but they should really consider renaming it and changing its focus from helping the supposedly less intelligent minorities to helping minority students figure out how to use their race as an advantage in the admissions process. Underrepresented minorities (i.e. Black, Hispanic, Native American, etc.) have a really big advantage in the process because of affirmative action. The school should be focusing on that instead of creating a pity party for "colored folk"

"color" is a term that has been used for numerous years. Not knowing the situation, I would guess that the conference has been around for quite some time. NAACP. . .C stands for "color". But for now let's forget the name of the conference.

Many colleges and universities target minority groups for various programs, b/c those programs have typically had low numbers of minorities apply and they want to increase the numbers. It isn't that they assume that "colored people can't get into certain college". They want higher number of applicants from minority groups, so that (theoretically) more will be admitted. Race is not supposed to be a determining factor in admissions. However, some colleges (University of MIchigan is one) that does give extra points/credits to minority applicants.

It is NOT harder for minorities to get into college! That is outrageous and disgusting! There are all these stupid programs and scholarships out there just for them -- I think It's reverse racism - People would say it was racist to have a scholarship set up solely for white people so why isn't it racist to have scholarships set up just for people of a certain minority or "color"? I think it's just plain retarded! Why can't everyone just accept that we are ALL THE SAME NO MATTER WHAT RACE, ETHNICITY, OR CULTURE we are!

well..it maybe racist or not depending on how people take it. but i think it all comes down how majority of the "colored" so stated presents themselves. As much as it may sound messed up. I have a lot of "colored" friends and i've seen some of them get into very good universities and make something of themselves but that's honestly few...majority of them act as if they don't know self respect...you know..gang banging..so honestly...its all how people view who as what and how who presents themselves as what.

I don't know that it's racist... I have seen many such things and people were never offended. Also, I doubt that minority members will have trouble being accepted to a college because of their skin color.

Wow, it does sound racist, but like something from years ago when they did try to create programs for minorities who have a harder time getting into college...
