Are you driving the vehicle on a dry hard surface road, in 4 wheel drive? You should not be doing so. Your Explorer is designed to be driven in four wheel drive on slippery or soft surfaces!

What you are hearing is the tires scraping. When the vehicle is in four wheel drive on a hard surface (concrete or asphalt) road, the tires are not adjusting to the different speeds required by turning, because the transfer case does not have a differential in it!!

See your owners manual for details!!
