we just bought a new car, and the dealer said they had to order a car title for us from California and we live in Boston, so they said it would take a while, is this true or is the dealer playing a game with us. we've been waiting for a long time for this car (2008 Honda Accord) but anyway, they said the car just came in but they needed a title, so we have to wait even longer, so is this normal? thanks

What has happened is either the MCO (Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin) had an error, or was sent to a bank or financial institution. Most dealers borrow money to pay for the cars they buy to put in stock, and the bank may hold the MCO as collateral! The dealer may be waiting for the bank to send them the title!

Mass has some strange laws in regard to vehicle sales, insurance and registration! In most states, the dealer can issue you temporary tags, and you can take the car with you! The dealer than has a certain number of days to go to DMV (in Mass RMV) and get the title work done and tags issued!

In Mass you have to pay for the car, and then get a form from your insurance company. You then must bring the form to the dealer, who will send a runner to RMV to get your tags! After the tags are issued, you are then covered by your insurance and can take the vehicle!

Your situation is "normal" for Mass, but not for the other 49 states!!

30 days or less. By the time your paper plate expires, you should have everything you need. Although in some states the lender holds the title until it's paid for.

That doesn't sound right because the titles in California are now electronic copies.
