Stress often causes people to lose, or more often, gain weight before getting married. Be sure to have enough "room" so that you can have the dress altered at the last minute if necessary.
Check with the store or seamstress to see how much time they need so you have access to the dress for photo sittings etc. and ask them to reserve some time about 2 weeks before the wedding to make any last minute changes......just in case.

When to have the dress altered depends on two things:
1. how much you think your weight will fluctuate between now and your wedding. If you're planning to change your weight, don't have your dress altered until about 2 months before the wedding. Otherwise, if you've been the same size for a long time and don't forsee any weight changes, go ahead and alter it whenever you're ready.
2. What type of alterations do you need? If you only need to have the dress hemmed or have shoulder straps taken in, those alterations are fairly simple and will only take a week or two. If you have more complicated alterations, or if the dress is difficult to alter because of the fabric and/or detail work, allow 3-4 weeks for the alterations.

Back into it!
Figure out how much before the wedding you want your final fitting ( I would suggest 2-4weeks just in case there is a problem that needs to be fixed)
Ask your shop the standard time required for alterations. You don't want to have to pay for rush alteration. This is usually 6-8 weeks.
I would say about 12 weeks (aka 3 months) is a good time to start!

My wedding isn't until October 1, 2010, finding the dress was the first thing I wanted to do, it was so fun and exciting! The more time you have to shop around the less pressured you will feel. One thing I did is make up a wedding date to tell the bridal stores, I went a couple weeks ahead of time that way if anything gets delayed or goes wrong I have some breathing room so I won't freak out as much!

I got married on August 25 and they said the latest they wanted to fit me for my dress was the beginning of June. Then I went in for another fitting to see if it fit and if it was bustled correctly, which it wasn't and some beads fell off. So they had to keep the dress and I ended up picking it up a few days before the wedding. Try not to cut yours so close, you never know if you are going to lose weight or something else needs to be fixed.

it depends on your body type. i have been the same weight since i was 16, so i bought my dress and had to altered really early. i had a corset back, so no taking in or out needed. all i needed was a hem and i already picked my shoes, so i got it hemmed almost a year beforehand.

At least 8 weeks before. You will need a few fittings. You should discuss this with dressmaker.

When out with a restaurant, ask the server to hold on to the bread, snack mix or chips and salsa which may come before the meal. Should you be hungry, you'll be tempted.
