My cat's blood test came out positive for possible heartworm, according to the veternarian. But he says this does not mean my cat has heartworm.

Is it treatable? Thanks - Jodi

there is no treatment for heartworm disease in cats like there is with dogs.

if your cat is suspected of having heartworm, you will need to put him on prevention such as heartgard for cats. this will prevent any babies (microfilaria) from developing. once they are on prevention, all you can do is wait for the adult worms to die and treat the cat for any symptoms such as coughing or vomiting.

cats also do not need to be tested prior to starting heartworm prevention like dogs do.

It can be treated, but the vet has to do it. Heartworm isn't common in cats. Can the vet try some other test to verify?

I don't think there's a good treatment for cats with heartworms. I believe they will monitor the heartworm via ultrasound until it dies on it's own.

Heartworm has to be treated by the vet. My vet doesn't even test my cat for heartworms, we keep them on prevention.

It is treatable, but NOT at home.
The treatment is also very deadly to the animal.
