Because they refuse to believe the truth. Creation, this world, space, everything points to intelligent design. They choose to deny it maybe because they're afraid, or they've had a lot of crap happen to them and they think that if God really did exist then the bad stuff wouldn't happen. But then we'd be robots b/c God gave us a choice to be like him or to sin and we choose to sin. So all the bad things that happen in this world is b/c of us not God. I kind of went off on a tangent there, but maybe it's just that since they believe that they're right, they want everyone else to agree with them too.

No, I am an atheist, and I have no problems. However, I do not see it as discouraging people from believing. I see it as encouraging people to think critically.

Why do some christians keep discouraging people from thinking critically?

The same reason you theists keep trying to discourage athiests from non-belief.

Personally, I think all of you on every sides of this particular pc. of silver need to get some perspective, quit messing in other people's lives and live your own the best way you know how.

We're trying to shake you into reality cos too many of you use the Invisible Sky Boss thingy as an excuse to perpetuate all sortsa evil crap AND I have this thing about leeches.

There's good money to be made from religion IF you can keep a straight face.

Yeah, generally most rational people have a problem with the notion of using bronze-age (or any age, really) mythology as the basis for one's way of living. Strangely enough, we have an even bigger problem when the people who embrace the faerietales attempt to have their beliefs codified into laws that we all have to follow.

take a step back and look at it this way because I say so and the world revolves around me.
Both sides are in the wrong because both sides try to convince the other that their beliefs are incorrect. It's disrespectful all around and sadly is a result of faith/conviction depending on who is opening their mouth any given moment.

Oops sorry, I must have forgotten that stating our own views, just like religious people do for theirs, means we are trying to discourage people.

Perhaps it is you who needs to learn to tell the difference.

Agnostic. Thanks for asking. Guess I just need a hug.

Atheists and theists have the same problem. Believing or disbelieving something that neither can prove.
(And then arguing about it! Priceless!)

Try accepting that you don't know and open the door to true Faith.

Over the years I have realized that it is not atheists that push people away from God. It is God's 'people' that do. Their intolerance and bigotry is often far from attractive.

Tolerance is always the best policy.
