I tried to read through sites and blah, but none are really clear... Can someone tell me what I have to do/course take/blah blah to hunt deer? I am going with my Moms friend, and he will do the tags ETC. But I need to know basic rules. I was going to do some course, but I found out I will have to wait until January maybe later. I am 15, and clueless, and I really have tried but cannot get any clear answers....

I will be using my Uncles 12 gauge, which is actually a really nice shotgun around 800$ but hasn't been used since he died. I have all the gun cleaning etc. But I would like to find out EVERYTHING I can.. Also, about Hunting Knives ETC, because I can buy one for myself and need to know law about that, also.. SO ANY tips you can offer... Please. And you don't have to suggest about starting at a lesser gauge, though.. Also Like a good routine to follow. I read through a hunting rule book, but I would rather hear from real Hunters.

Thanks, Hunter.

(Yeah, Ironic but true.)

Sorry. But unless you have already completed the required New York State Hunter's Safety program and have proof you completed it, you can just about forget hunting this year. You can't even legally purchase a hunting license without a Hunters Safety Course Completion Certificate in New York State. You have only (2) options...A) New York State Hunting regulations require EVERYONE, regardless of age MUST complete a state sponsored Hunter Safety Course or.... B) You must be able to show written proof you personally have had a hunting license issued previously (You must actually show the license itself as proof to get a waiver).....

It gets a bit worse..New York State has separate Hunters Safety Courses for both Firearms Hunting and a separate course for Bowhunting (Deer) Both courses are mandatory (required) if you intend to hunt both seasons....

Check out this website and click on Hunter Education tab on the home-page...

You forgot the most important thing....what state are you in??? Every state has it's own hunting laws. No one can answer your question without a state. In my state, you need a hunting licence first, that you can only get when you complete a "hunters safety course, or also called a firearms safety course". Then you can apply for a year long hunting license. After that, you also need certaing permits for hunting the different seasons, like deer, small game, waterfowl, etc. Then, (each hunter) needs to apply for "tags" to hunt and keep the deer. I understand your confusion, in my state its also very confusing and way too complicated. I think they do this on purpose to tell you the truth, to get less people hunting!!!!!

Goto your town office and get a law regulations book. In most states they are free. What you are talking about having to take is a hunters safety course. If you need to take it that means its the only way for you to obtain a license. Its required when wanting to carry a gun and hunt during hunting season. Without a hunting license I guess they would classify it as an illegal hunting violation or poaching if you actually shoot one. Gerber makes a good hunting knife. I have one I forget the name of it but it has a rubber handle. Gun cleaning is easy. Just put the rods together. Put the attachment on that has a loop in it like a sewing needle but bigger. But 2 or 3 patches into it depending on how big they are. Soak it in solvent solution used to clean guns. Make a couple passes with it up and down the barrel. Make sure not to push it into the action (where all the mechanical stuff goes on. Some guns you can remove the barrel anyways. If you can do that first.) Then take off the attachment that holds the patches then screw on a brush for it. Bronze wire brush. The big one with the large screw adapter. Give it a good scrubbing with 5 - 10 passes. Then put back on the patch adapter and put a few more dry patches on. Keep making passes and changing out the patches until they start to come out clean. That is when you know the gun is clean. Always make sure the gun is unloaded and never cork the barrel to have things soak in it obviously.

If you want to know any more specifics with general hunting rule let me know. I live in Maine so I'm not to familiar with your hunting regulations in New York. Good luck and keep me posted.
