My lips, gums, and tongue itch and burn very badly when I drink certain brands of soy milk (unflavored), or eat fresh fruit such as bananas or apples (pears have no effect). The fruit has to be fresh - canned or cooked fruit does not have this effect. It's been a problem my whole life, but I've yet to find anyone else who experiences this.

I agree that it's oral allergy syndrome. Here is a quote from wikipedia (because I'm too tired to put it in my own words!)

Oral Allergy Syndrome or OAS is an allergic reaction to certain (usually fresh) fruits, nuts, and vegetables. The allergy is not actually an allergy to food but a syndrome that develops in hay fever sufferers. The immune system mistakes the food proteins for the pollen proteins and causes an allergic reaction. Another term used for this syndrome is "Pollen-Food Allergy."

Apples are triggered by Alder pollen and bananas are triggered by ragweed..

There are many people I know who experiences this. First of all, avoid soy milk as all soy in this country are grown "genetically modified" meaning our agriculture dept has mixed soy seeds that have been cloned with traits that are supposed to keep them resilient from bugs and other pests, and have been proven to change mice's DNA and promote strange growth in the stomach & digestive system. This is not news that they put out there for the public, corn is also modified. There are many things out there in your food that only informed people know about. People who do research on how their food is grown.

As for your problem with fresh fruits, it's the pesticides along with the preservatives/additives which are not listed especially in the way that it's grown that are affecting people like you this way. As pesticide is sprayed on the outside of fruits, the skins absorbs it and it reaches the insides as well. Also, if you are allergic to ragweed, during that season, you cannot eat certain fruits like melons, strawberries as the ragweed is in the air and is also absorbed by the fruit.

I have the same reaction to kiwi, oranges, and bananas with any green left on them. I assume that it's an allergy.

I've noticed that my reaction has become worse over time, so I completely avoid these things now. If I'm sitting next to you and you peel an orange, I'll get hives. 10 years ago I could eat oranges constantly.

So, avoid those trigger foods. An allergy can start out mild and become severe with further exposure.

If you want to you can ask your doctor to refer you for allergy testing.

Good luck.

It is called oral allergy syndrome. It is usually linked with pollen allergies. I used to be allergic to nearly all raw fruits and vegetables. Just getting the juice on my skin made me break out in a rash. After being on allergy desensitation shots for five years for my pollen allergies, my allergy to raw fruits and vegetables went away. Now I can actually eat a salad.

Bananas, cantalopes, and walnuts do the same to me. I've always just considered it an allergy.

I don't really have anything to add other than now you've found someone else who experiences this......you're not alone in this cold, lonely world :)
