My dog who just recently had 10 puppies has been pooping all over the house while we are not home or are sleeping. and she tears stuff up and gets into the trash, too, but she has plenty of food/water. We can't leave her out side, cause it's too cold and the pups are too young. and they don't star weaning for another week! My mom wants to send all the pups to the humane society and say their mom dog can't take care of them! But i love all of them sssoooo much! I am just getting really PISSED that i have to keep cleaning up after my dog!!!! what do i do to get her to stop pooping and peeing and generally making a huge mess? i don't want my mom to get rid of the pups! HELP!!!!

I seriously want to cry. I already have found a home for most of the pups when they get old enough, and they start weaning next week.........
How can you expect me to KILL these 10 puppies I have been loving for all this time!? Would you kill YOUR OWN baby in this situation!?

Remind you mom it is only for a few more weeks, until they are around 10ws old and can go to new homes. You can help by keeping everything very clean around the house and taking your momma dog out every few hours, even over night. The less mess your moms sees the less the puppies will bug her, so do all the work cleaning up after them. Confine the dogs to one area by using a inside dog pen set up, or a room with a door. When they are older they can go to a breed rescue or no kill shelter, not a shelter where they could be euthenized so start looking for one around you now and make some calls. If your mom won't pay to have them get shots before they go to a shelter God knows what they might catch, they are better off at your house for now so young. You can't keep all these dogs forever, but you and your mom can find a better solution to find them homes if you help her with the legwork. Just a few more weeks of inconvenience might make the difference between living and dying for these pups, remind your mother about that!!
I say call the shelter first and warn them about what your mom means to do, so they know she is lying too. Remind your mother that dumping these dog on a shelter to be bottle fed and taken care of is STEALING from a charity all because she is too lazy to look after her own dog. Also be sure you tell her how giving away these pups too young will scar you for life, and remind her one day she will be old and sick and you just might send her to the first free old folks home so you won't need to deal with HER incontanace issues.
Add: Maggie Pie, I have been an employee and volunteer of SPCA shelters and foster animals all the time. I just finished bottle rearing lab pups someone else would not deal with and I am vegan, have been for 14 years. Sometimes I will give people answers they don't like, but I am not being a jerk for jerk's sake here.
Add: Sorry Maggie Pie, though you had said "everybody on this form", and thought you meant me too. I just disagree with taking them to the shelter so young if it is only a few weeks from now if the questioner can't do something to calm her mom down, so I try to help think of things to keep them with mommy dog if at all possible and guilt on a human mother can really work at times :)

If you want to keep the dog take responsibility for the care, feeding and training. To house train: Take the dog out every 30 minutes. If the dog pees or poops reward and praise as if it is the best thing any dog has ever done. Do not bring the dog inside immediately after it pees or poops. Allow the dog to sniff and enjoy the yard for a while. Do this repeatedly throughout the day. Crate the dog when he cannot be watched to prevent accidents on the carpet. Pick up the water bowl 2 hours before bedtime. Take the dog out when the water bowl is picked up. Take the dog out a few minutes before bedtime. You may need to take the dog out twice during the night. Feed on a schedule at the same times each day. Once on a schedule most dogs will poop 30 minutes before or after the meal. It will help if you take the dog to the same place in the yard each time. You go out with the dog to make sure it goes. You do not send the dog out without an observer until 100% dependable. Use an enzyme cleaner to get all of the odor out of the carpet or the dog may return to the same spot.

Honestly if your mom isn't willing to put the money out and you aren't willing to go out and mow lawns or collect cans for the money to do so then you guys need to get rid of mom and the pups. She is being a mother. With ten pups she's working overtime and guess what that what happens. If you are that bothered by the whole situation do as much research on the reasons to spay your dog and hand it to your mom. OR let her read these answers. Dogs are a ton of responsibility and puppies are 10 Xs as much. Do yourself, your mother and the dog/pups a favor and let them be re-homed.

give her a room if you can. one with a box. how old are they pups should not leave the mom until they are AT LEAST 8 weeks but the longer the better.
the mom dog should be on a high protein food for whelping mothers. or at least a puppy food. she needs LOTS of vitamins etc. to keep up with milk and her own weight. this could be why she gets in the garbage. do some research
then the pups should have softened puppy kibble....to wean.
Then you should have your dog fixed before this happens again....most shelters have a low cost spay/neuter program.

So you mean before she had the pups, she was perfectly housebroken and trained not to eat the trash and destroy things? I have a hard time believing that. Instead, it seems like you're one of those people that keeps their dog outside 24/7 so that you don't have to train her to behave indoors.
Look, you made a huge mistake by not spaying her. Just admit it - hiding behind your mom just makes you seem like a coward. Don't even try to pretend that your mom wouldn't let you spay her - minimal research would have found you a free spay/neuter clinic at a shelter, OR you could have saved up just a hundred bucks to spay her yourself. If you're going to say "a hundred bucks is a lot in my family" then I feel sorry for those puppies because they are gonna cost MUCH more than a hundred bucks to deworm and provide shots and socialisation for.
For now, buy a baby gate and confine her to a small area of the house for the next couple of weeks till the pups are fully weaned. Then, spay her, housebreak her and teach her what's okay to get into and what's not. In other words: START TAKING CARE OF YOUR DOG.

First of all, shame to everybody on this form who just made a mockery of this entire situation. Ultimately, I think you might find that yelling never helps, and yelling at kids who don't have control over their situations is utterly pointless. If you want to be passionate about animal rights, do it in a place where you are actually helping, like volunteering at your local humane society. Heck, if you really believe in animal rights you can become a vegan, I did. Just don't attack and anger people for no reason.
Now, for the puppies. I think it might be time for them and mom to all go to the shelter. The unfortunate part about this, they will probably all be destroyed. That said, you aren't in a position to take care of them. Sometimes we all have to face realities that aren't that fun, and this is one of them. I understand that you want the best for them, but you have repeatedly said yourself that you just don't know what to do, and that you don't have the resources to take the good suggestions of people here. Ultimately, keeping the puppies around will be just as destructive as bringing them to the shelter. In all likelihood you would end up giving them away to any takers and they would end up producing more puppies that aren't wanted. Its tough, but better the humane society give them half a chance then you have them end up in places where they will only probably continue to contribute to the pet overpopulation problem. I know that you care, but that doesn't mean you can work against everything to make this into a good situation.
Meg- your answer didn't strike me as jerk-like or an attack at all. I apologize that it is hard to say things tactfully and get them directed to the right people. I try, but hey, things never work the way you want them to do they?

You need to contain her and the pups to one room that doesn't have a trash can or anything else to tear up, while no one is home. Put some papers down, leave food and water, and a few toys, as well as whatever bed/box the pups are currently in. there's no need to let her have freedom to roam and destroy the house while you are gone. After she's weened the pups and tehy are gone, then perhaps she can handle being left loose again, until then, confine them.

Contact a local rescue for help. Go to http://www.petfinder.com and llok for a rescue in your area for help. They are not going to kill the puppies, but as much as you love them, you said yourself you are tired of cleaning up the messes. However, puppies and dogs do this and it is part of the responsibility.
Please contact your local rescue and get some help.
My question is how did your dog get pregnant in the first place? Even if she isn't spayed, if youonly have on dog, what happened?
Please contact a local rescue for help.

You, my dear, are in over your head. Momma needs constant access to the outdoors, or she's gonna keep using the potty in the house.. you can try getting a really big crate and keep them all inside.. but with 10 pups, that's a lot of cleaning.. and you don't seem like you're up for it..
I think the HS is the best place for them.. I'm sure no matter what.. all 10 pups have homes to go to at this point.. right? And they've put deposits down.. and you've met with them frequently and already registered your pure bred, champion bloodlined puppies? RIGHT?
I'm sure EVERY one of these 10 pups will make it out of the shelter into life-long homes.. and that your dog is going to be spayed ASAP... SURE..

Ok, if you have any money or see if you can get some from your mom and look at your local petstore or ebay for a puppy pen or excersize pen, whatever you call them make sure you get the three feet hight one. then get a couple tarps and lay one on the ground, next put the pen over the tarp and lay newspaper down, put the momma dog's water and food in there with her and her puppies. keep letting her outside to go potty alot, then put her back in the pen. put fresh paper in there often, and change the tarp every day, with the old one take it outside hose it off, and dry it fold it for the next time you switch tarps. that should work its working with my golden retriever and her 9 puppies. where are you located if all else fails try and find some one with a momma dog and see if their dog will adopt your puppies, good luck!!!
You can e-mail me with any other questions.
