i jst got a six month old great dane who is huge, but not even full grown. She's all black but doesnt have her ears cropped and people stay far away and make comments about how scary she looks when i take her out on walks or to pet stores. She looks like a big cute dog to me, but is anyone really scared of a great dane?

No, not me, I have three and one more on the way in 7 wks. She's a week right now. She's my avatar. Usually when we go to town with them all, we walk out of the store to see all kinds of people petting and loving on them. Though it really irritates me when someone asks if our harlequins are dalmations. Nothing against dalmations, but as if they could get that big.

My Great Danes got my father-in-law over his fear of dogs, which he had since he was a child and got bit.

Great Danes are about as vicious as a stuffed Teddy Bear. I don't find them intimidating in the least, but that's not to say that I don't have a healthy respect for their size and strength, but they are a very gentle breed.
People that don't know dogs tend to be scared of anything big especially if they are black. For some reason, a lot of people find black dogs more intimidating than dogs that are other colors.
I have a 90 pound male Doberman that always has a sweet look on his face. He's in my avatar! Anyway, even though he is always sweet and goofy looking, people cross the street to get away. It's just people's nature to be scared of something they aren't familiar with.

OMG!! That happens to me all the time. We have a female 7 month old blue merle great dane. People who see us coming while walking her will literally cross the street to avoid walking by her. I will also add that her ears are not cropped either. People ALWAYS make comments about her size and ask what kind of dog she is. They are the most beautiful, big, goofy and loveable dogs ever. She's a big couch potato :)

I am not afraid of them! All the Great Danes I have ever meet have been great dogs. The closest I ever got was my Irish Wolfhound/Great Dane mix. She was a 150 lb dog that loved everyone and scared a lot of people because of her size. Because of the Irish Wolfhound in her she was even taller then a Great Dane. I think most people are scared of their size and don't know what a lovable dog they are.
Enjoy your pup! You have gotten a great dog.

There is no reason to be afraid of a 6 month old puppy.
The only dogs that scare me are the ones that are being walked by people who look like they don't have a clue what they are doing and their dog is out of control. Those people tend to think that their dog is fine around anyone or anything and don't keep it under control.

Nope since I work at Petsmart and I'am a dog trainer. People think that great danes are huge if you haven't seen a massive they are very huge much bigger than a great dane.

Ignore her! Best possible way to get her to warm up to you. When she is acting frightened and stand offish, don't talk sweetly to her or try to bribe with her a treat. Doing that only reinforces the negative behaviour. Just sit back, ignore her and let her come to you, things will work out! Also remember that dogs need boundaries and limitations to feel comfortable and assured. So don't allow her everything and free reign of the house, just because you want to look like the good guy and have her lovin you. Good luck!
