When Al Gore's documentary came out and all of the supposed facts were thrown at us, along with the testimony of a seemingly vast majority of scientists, I was sold on Global Warming. But lately i've been hearing a lot of doubting of it and "brushing it off."

I really don't know what to believe. Of course we can never be certain, but is there an above 50% chance that the global warming purporters are right? Sometimes when I hear people go against the theory of global warming, they sound uneducated and random. They'll say things like "ohh it's a farce, ohh it's fear-propaganda."

What do you guys think? I mean, isn't there overwhelming proof about the ice caps melting?

Yes it's happening, and yes humans are speeding it up. But by barely anything. The amount of Co2 a volcano erupting puts in the air is equal to the amount of co2 all the cars in the world put into the air in a year

What happens in the earth's atmosphere is that it naturally slowly gets hotter, and then colder, and then hotter etc. (there have been 6 "ice ages" we know of, and the earth has been around for billions of years. People who say there is global warming and people who say there isn't GW are both right in a sense. There IS GW occurring, but mankind isn't affecting it as much as people think

Also, in California, there are already hydrogen powered motorcycles, which runs on the basis of water, hydrogen (the H in H2O). This may not be much, but it means that the technology must be finalizing, and hopefully before 2010 the first gas-less cars will be available to purchase.

It isn't perfect, but it's the best we've got

I think i strayed a bit from the topic, but hope that helps

Well it's definitely real. And while there are natural fluxes in the Earth's temperatures, the rate of temp increase is unheard of in geologic time. Also the levels of CO2 are higher than there have ever been since the Phanerozoic (545 million years).

So humans definitely need to slow/end their polluting. But this is in the disinterest of many, many companies. Which is why American, the capitol of capitalism, is having personal issues grasping the repercussions of global warming.

Technically we are in an ice age. An ice age is when one or both of the poles are covered in ice. So people are right when they say the Earth is heating up anyways. But the problem is that global warming is occurring faster than ever in geologic time. Mind you geologic time is in terms of millions and thousands of years. But at our rate were talking about 100 years or so.

So our options are:

a) do everything we can to slow our impact on global warming so we can construct and plan to deal with it when it eventually comes (long time).

b) sit on our hands and see what happens (famine, economy collapses, water shortages, greater amounts of severe storms, etc.)

Despite what the uneducated posters in this forum may tell you, the truth, the whole truth, is that nobody knows for 100% sure whether we are experiencing global warming or just another typical weather cycle. Just because the average temperatures in many locations are rising, by a very small degree I might add, does not necessarily mean that we are facing an epidemic. My hometown of Jacksonville, Florida has actually had a reduction in our average temperature by approx. .7 degrees since 2000.

Some parts of the planet are warming...and some are cooling.

The nicest thing I can say about Al Gore and those that believe his writings is they cannot prove what they say is manmade.

To believe only what people you agree with say, and to shun those that disagree with you is not concensus, it is bias.

Most damaging to the global warming crowds epistles of doom is that they doctor photographs, distort facts and deny the possibility of dissent.
Besides, concensus is not empirical fact.

You will hear the onslaught of personal opinions that global warming is just part of the normal fluctuations that our Earth always experiences.

The proof is in what our governments are doing about it right now. They're proposing legislation to address it as we speak. If global warming wasn't happening, our politicians wouldn't consider spending billions of dollars to address the problem. You'll see legislation passed in the U.S. within the next 2 years.

yes, there has been plenty of data supporting the scientific consensus but there has been no studies rebuking this consensus. according to the IPCC there is a >90% chance that humans are causing this, they don't do any studies themselves they just summaries all the data that is already out there. this is considered to be on the conservative side because it can only use data that is 2 years old and that newer more convincing info cannot be used.

Whenever somebody tells you that "What happens in the earth's atmosphere is that it naturally slowly gets hotter, and then colder, and then hotter etc." ask them what causes it. A skeptic will not be able to answer why with any accuracy.
