It's really different to everyone. Some people say a lower back tattoo doesn't hurt but for others they pass out from the pain.
Don't get it on the Ribs, Collar bone or Feet because they are VERY painful.

What alot of people do is get a small tattoo of say a star or heart somewhere to see if they can take the pain then they go on to have bigger pieces. Get it on a really meaty part of your body somewhere that isn't really boney and you'll be fine.

I have Phil Ochs tattooed on my arm (people singer) I even have "Never Die" and a rose tattooed throughout my ft, with a tigerbat above the ft on my left foot for Tiger Army. I see me getting a pair extra musician tattoos. I have an Ochs lyric tattoed around the again of my neck (Sacred are the scars) and an Op Ivy lyric around the insides of each palms (It's lovely I could say... I shouldn't have it every other method.) I'm considering a scorching-rod tradition tat, skulls and roses and a banner, gotta prefer the lyric to move within the banner although. As it stands in these days, I'd usually prefer "In dying as in lifestyles, I will come up" or "My sense of right and wrong consists of the burden of blood."

Well you want it somewhere that it's easily hidden. I would say on your foot but that's kind of painful and also you'd have to be able to not wear shoes for the whole time it's healing or it will get all messed up. My first tattoo was on my back kind of on one shoulder... right by my bra strap but toward the middle of my back. It hurt kind of, and other people say this is a painful place to do it, but it wasn't really that bad and I didn't like cry or spaz out or anything, it just wasn't super pleasant. Still hurt less than getting a tongue ring. Another good spot is on your tummy kind of on the side near your waistband. Or on your lower back right above waistband but I personally think it looks slutty and would be painful with the part of it having to be on your spine.
Or if you have long hair you can get it on the back of your neck... but then what about when your old and you want a 'granny' style and you have this tattoo?? lol.

Wherever is easier for you to hide. That's what I would do.

This is the best answer to this question without a doubt. Get it where you want it, not where you think it will hurt the least. Trust me... and anyone else that thinks I am right.Ha!... no but really.

getting mine on the back of my neck (low enough to be covered by a shirt) didn't hurt too bad.

but the one on my foot/ankle hurt alot (only hurt right next to the bone on the outer side of the foot). so i suggest not there lol

anywhere fleshy seems to be ok (from what i've heard)

Though it's been done to death (and is no longer trendy) - the "little heart on the butt" tattoo is probably the least painful - both in size AND location ;);)
