Mostly due to comfort. Bumps dont jar quite as bad, interiors are a bit quieter, more creature comforts inside. For some, performance increases make the ride for them, others value safety measures like improved crush zones and air bags, not to mention stability control and traction control. Each person will have different tastes in what they like about a vehicle.

In my opinion, they haven't.
The older ones were more fun.
The new ones do everything us drivers used to do, except look out the windshield.

Cruise control, ABS, collision sensors.......................
All stuff that was invented for people who didn't like to learn how to drive.

Sorry, I still disagree. Look at the cars from the '60s-early '70s. Nice curves and flowing lines(Corvette Stingray). Then look what's made today(Scion?). All straight lines, boxes on wheels. Today's mini is a car trying to make a comeback, just like the VW Beetle.

I prefer to ride my cars over bumps and dips, not "over the years". But seriously, cars have not become more fun, just more comfortable and with less maintenance. One of the most "fun" things I ever drove was a three wheeled truck made by Cushman in the 1970's that ran on a lawnmower type engine.

they have gotten sportier to drive and handle a lot better, and are a little more fuel efficient also, and their smaller, and with all the new improvements in the brakes and suspension systems they have,it makes them funner to drive ,the older ones didn't handle good, and wasn't that comfortable to ride in either, those are the best reasons i can think of,that and they go faster, good luck.
