Hey I have F cat about 3-4 years. She keeps going over to the litter box but very little/no urine is coming out. She doesn't seem like she is any pain when she is/trying to go. She is still eating all her food at her meals and sleeps and plays like normal. I am suspecting a bladder infection/blockage but the fact that she is not in any pain is making me wonder. I've just noticed this habit today and if after tomorrow she is still doing it I was going to take her to the vet. My question is if there is any other thing that could be wrong with her (with her not having any pain when she is trying to go) apart from a bladder infection? I like to be prepared and do some of my own research before going to the vet.

Hi Sandy.. it appears your cat may have a lower urinary tract infection (UTI) from what you've described: http://www.peteducation.com:80/article.cfm?cls=1&cat=1372&articleid=214

I had the same problem this year with my male cat but think of it this way...both male and female cats have an urethra. Lucky (my baby) developed bladder stones and he would always go to the litter box and scratch around without anything happening. By the time I realized he was in trouble, it was almost too late.
My vet told me that this problem is usually caused by his diet! I would always try to buy brand-name, mid-priced cat food (Friskies,Purina, etc) and was shocked that I had inadvertently fed him the food that made this happen. Now he has to be on a permanent diet of special food designed for his urinary tract system. Purina One (three pound bag is about $8.00) has worked well for us and this is probably what your vet will recommend.

It very possibly could be a bladder/urinary tract infection.

If she doesn't seem to be in pain - you could first take a sample in to the vet of the litter she used. Have them test that - they may be able to diagnose whats going on without bringing your cat in!

Overall, I would recommend taking her to the vet! Domestic animals have become very good at hiding their pain from their owners over the years! Animals don't like to show fear, pain, etc - it makes them weak and vulnerable.

Good Luck!!!

Female cats CAN block--we had one of ours do that last year. The grains of crystals were like a sludge in her bladder, eventually blocking her urethra. The vet had to operate and get the stuff out.

Males do block easier because their urethra is thinner, but even females can block up.

Before going to the vet plug in to your search engine the symptoms for your cat. Then you will have a better idea while talking to the vet.

I did this and diagnosed my cat's condition before the vet told me the same diagnosis. I felt better being educated.

Female cats do not block so you don't have to worry about that (males do and its life threatening). Most likely she has urinary stones or cystitis (urinary infection). Unless she is constipated however they usually growl when trying to push out a hard feces.
