How come the prisoner executed is more expensive (spending more $$) than the prisoner in the jail forever?

That's an excellent question. The cost to keep someone in jail is $40000/yr where I live. The cost of a bullet is still under 25 cents. Somehow it seems like it should be cheaper to just execute.

IT IS A MYTH:

The initial trial costs what the initial trial costs. That doesn't change.
The appeals process is an exaggerated and inflated estimate of the actual costs. The defendant pays his own attorney or in the instance of some one who can't afford an attorney, there are many free legal services (especially in capital cases).

The often quoted cost of incarceration is an average based on the overall prison population. It hasn't been focused on the "lifers" who otherwise would have been executed.

Because lawyers are VERY, very expensive and it takes YEARS of appeals to carry out and execution..it is so expensive it costs much more than life imprisonment. The public usually pays the accused attorney fees because they have a right to an attorney even if they cant afford one.

It isn't an urban myth, it is hellaciously expensive to execute someone, as stated above, due to the ridiculous costs of trial after trial, appeal after appeal. Numerically, it is far cheaper to incarcerate one man than it is to go thru all the motions to execute him.

"Loyal" is correct about the cost of lawyers and appeals but I wouldn't think so. I think they should change the death sentence to 30 days after the sentencing of guilt, the execution should be carried out. Just like they did with Hussein. All of the evidence should be brought forward though. No lawyer, police.anyone, should withhold evidence. If anyone does, they serve two years . Period.

THE COST OF A HIGH PROFILE TRIAL IS IN EXCESS OF 1 TO 2 MILLION TO PROSECUTE AND FIND GUILTY. THEN THERE ARE COUNTLESS APPEALS FOR THE NEXT 10-15 YEARS.
THE COST OF INCARCERATION IS $30 A DAY ($10,800 A YEAR) THIS IS OF COURSE RISING WITH MEDICAL AND DENTAL CARE. BUT TO REACH 2 MILLION WE STILL HAVE A LARGE GAP. (40 YEARS = $406,400)
