Feng Shui is the Japanese art of placement. It focuses on placement, orientation and furniture, doors, windows, plants, colors....etc in order to channel positive energy (chi or whatever you call it) and promote serenity and good fortune. A couple examples of feng shui are: plants are considered to be very good energy inducing. You are suppose to keep many plants (silk ones are acceptable) in the home, one plant should have money placed in its base ($300-$500 dollars) in order to provide good fortune in the year to come. Any concept is the 2 doors are never directly opposite each other, they must be offset so the the positive energy doesn't flow out of the room. Also, toilet lids must always be down, so that the positive energy from the home doesn't go down the drain. Its kind of a cross between old world superstitions and interior decorating.
Take from it what you like. Bookstores have tons of info on it.

fengshui literally mean feng = wind, shui = water in chinese. it is a form of divination made by the chinese about 4,000 years ago to increase crop yield. later it was adapted to win wars by the chinese military in different dynasties. now it is adapted to make life convenient in our everyday living.
it is a divination, therefore not a belief, not a religion, not a philosophy, not a decorating style. and you don't need to be a psychic to practice fengshui. but you need to learn fengshui from a fengshui practitioner/ master to learn the concepts/ techniques, because no one is writing about their "secret" uses in books or in websites.
fengshui is basically knowing where the good energy, and use this to improve life (or know where the bad energy, and avoid this). this energy or chi cannot be felt nor sensed, it can only be calculated by the use of fengshui concepts/ techniques.
there are many concepts like flying stars, 8 mansions, water placements/ water dragons, xuan kong da gua, etc.. these are mostly what fengshui master teach their students. though the methods are basic and similar, each master has a different take on the techniques, and a different way in applying.
most of these concept and ways of applying are trade secrets of fengshui masters/ practitioners, thus no one is writing about these. some writers like lillian too and eva wong have written some how tos, but still no one has written the "secret" or real application of the technique they have written about. because of this, there is much mystery about it.
it is better to have a house or a building built based on fengshui, than adjusting a house or a building to accomodate fengshui. a house or a building can be very american in its interior/ design and yet have good fengshui. you don't need to have baguas, mirrors, statues or animals or dragons and chimes.
read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feng_shui the info there is pretty much accurate. and you don't see any black hat or clearing the clutter method!
fengshui is not easy. you can have several takes on the same concept, or different ways of application. and it is difficult to duplicate a certain outcome. the reason for this is the person's destiny. in fengshui, destiny can be calculated again using bazi method.
what is fengshui like? flying stars is used to locate good and bad areas in your house. the house is first either divided 3 rows by 3 columns. then the facing direction/ degree (with you inside the house facing the main door, looking out) is measured using a luo pan or big compass. then using this and the date when you first used the house or the date which you had your last major (at least 2/3's of the house) renovation, which ever is latest is used. these 2 are used in "flying the stars".
flying the stars is actually 3 sets of 1 to 9 moved around the 3x3 grid. 3 sets pertains to mountain, water and base or time. each of the numbers represents an element. (1 is water; 2,5,8 is earth; 3,4 is wood; 6,7 is metal; 9 is fire) when the "stars are flown", each box in the 3x3 grid will contain 3 numbers, the numbers will interact and react with each other. and their reactions will form new energy. to complicate things, there is a time element in fengshui - meaning time too has a changing element, and this element can interact with the 3 numbers on the box. (i know) it is difficult to understand explaining flying stars here.
http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc29/dogen_zenji/flystar.jpg
the ending chart (3x3 grid) is superimpose to the house plan or blue print of the house; the directions (north, south, east and west) must be used in superimposing.
then you need to analyze each energy that is produced in each of the box.
basically the best energy is at the south where the double 8 are located, so i will put here the busiest place in the house like the living room, kitchen or den. the southwest and west are also good, but they can cause certain small accidents. thus, i can make these areas into bedrooms. there is too much fire (bec of 7,2,9 combination) in the northeast section, thus this can be a bathroom, so the water can tame the fire. then if the house is big enough, i can also make the south room bigger to enlarge the chi where the double 8 are located, and make the areas where the bad chi (east, north, northeast) smaller.
in flying stars when you provide movements or use the room, the chi will activate and make it happen. for example the 883 in the south will have financial success and raise responsible children - if the family always use this area frequently, this will happen. but there are times like when the children is in school, no one in left in the house. in this case, to assure that there is movement in this area, i can put a pendulum clock or an aquarium with an aerator (number and color of fish is not important!) or a dog. but remember movements can also activate bad chi. so when a dog uses a room with a bad chi frequently then the bad thing will happen, maybe as an accident.
this is just 1 take on flying stars, there are many ways of applying flying stars on the same house.

Feng Shui means "Wind & Water" and is the ancient science of balancing the elements within the environment.
This can affect or improve your way of living in your health, abundance, business, love, etc. I do believe that the correct display of your furniture, colors, decoration and natural light can make you feel at a cozy home or just in a "place" you have to be, as well to feel relaxed, healthy and by simple changes actually have prosperity in more areas of your life.
I found this website, hope is interesting for you:

It is a way that some cultures think a room should be set up.
The bed needs to face a certain direction. The room needs to be in harmony with the elements of nature.
I personally set out my room in the way I am inspired, maybe that is my innate personal Feng Shui
The mind has powers that suggestions give to it. We all make our choices per what is expected, what is scientific, what is in rebellion, or what we want. Hmmmmmmmm
Sounds like I am answering a question in Philosophy
