I'm a college student applying for an internship and the only jobs I've had are crappy retail part-time jobs in high school that have absolutely nothing to do with the career I'm in school for (graphic design). Should I include them or leave them out?

Put them in. It shows that, even though you don't yet have experience in that field, you at least have work experience. Highlight the things in your job descriptions that are relevant to the internship. For example, if it's a team environment, show how your retail jobs required teamwork. If the company works with retail clients, show knowledge of that industry and it's customers.

After you've had a few internships and then a job in your field, you can drop the unrelated jobs from your resume.

A lot of times employers want work history information not to see if you have experience in that field, but more to see if you have a good work ethic in general. They will probably want to call your previous employer to get an idea of what kind of employee you will be. Also, I know employers look to see if you changed jobs every week or so or if you stuck with one for a long time. I would include on your resume any jobs that you held for a long time and/or any that would give you a good reference if they were called. But you don't need to put all of them on, just enough to give them an idea.

Here's how you list it:

2001 - 2007 - Various retail positions where I was responsible for handling cash, performing customer service, creating merchandising displays, and increasing sales.

That way they can see you have some experience, and you've tailored it to show that you have skills and can be reliable - don't bore them with the details of each individual job.

Include them. They'll show you have been working, and that's worth something. Good luck at getting the internship.

In writing a resume, you have to tailor it according to the required skills of the job. You simply highlight those that are relevant and low light those that are not. However, you have to include everything.

Good luck

no if they have nothing to do with them. but if youre creative you can make some of your duties correlate somehow if you have no other job experience, but most employers expect college grad to have few job experiences
