I go to a pretty large college in Indiana that's predominantly white, and one thing I've noticed is that the white students are reluctant to interact with the black students.
A perfect example of this is when I'm in my dorm room with the door open...no one will pop in and say hi to me, but they'll stop at all the other rooms in the hall. White girls on campus will hardly look me in the eye even if I smile at them.
So, are most (not all) white people unconsciously racist or is my school just full of pricks? I expect a lot of hostile answers but I'm being serious here

It could very well be that you are actually making yourself unapproachable by the other students... have you been very friendly with them? I don't live in the US but I've head alot of awful things about the colleges there.
I'm a European girl living in Canada, and my future husband is Muslim and of a different race than me. I love him with all my heart and thought he was perfect since the moment I met him. So I'm a true example that not all white people are racist dear, but I won't deny that they certainly exist.
No matter what, if it becomes a big issue for you I really believe it would be best to switch schools next year? Come up to a school in Canada :) we'll give you lots of love here in Toronto!
Good luck

Don't know what college you go to but I live in Indiana. What school do you go to? ISU, Ball State, Purdue, IUPUI, IU? I am white and I am not racist. I would actually like to have more black friends. Sometimes I think black people in Indiana are reluctant to talk to white people too. Like they are trying to stick together, understandable. Though I have noticed a lot of white people in Indiana are racist, bothers me. I think it is because they are not use to having a lot of black people around. I have not lived here my whole life, I been around lots of blacks in my day. I lived on military bases. I wish there was more of a variety of race here. Indy has a lot of black people but I have not lived here very long. So I have not really got the feel for this area. I lived near Terre Haute, small town called Brazil. There was only like 10 black people at my school, I was honestly surprised to see that when I moved here. I went to high school for 2 years here. Now I am going to Ivy tech and then transferring to Ball State.
Other wise how is Ball State?

Gee. Maybe you can get out of your room and show you are a person worth knowing. I don't think white people are racist. I think people first tend to congregate with the type of people they are used to being around. Especially when they are away from home like at school.
Just be friendly and maybe make the first step yourself. If you've done this and still are being kept at arms distance, join some clubs or other campus or community activities that you would like. People you meet there are people who like the same thing you do and you'd have a better chance of making friends.

I'm so laughing. I think your question is great. I'm a Southerner who moved to Yankee land when I married. I'm also white. I think the reason the races don't mingle too much is that we really don't know what the other person is thinking. Also, at least in the South, we each had different upbringing. Now I have a number of Black friends and I'm finding out that were really interested in the same things and our skin color doesn't mean that much. I also think we tend to seperate ourselves from each other with difinitive names like Afro-American, Italian-American, German-American,------whatever-American. If we were born here we are Americans...Those other names are our ethnic background names. Wish I was young enough to go to a college in Indiana
now. I'd come in and talk to you. Stick with it, do well in whatever you choose to do and good luck and God Bless.

My first guess would be that if you don't extend yourself to others, they won't extend themselves to you.
Some white women don't look me in the eye when I smile at them and I'm white.
Leave your attitude at the door and stop by anothers dorm room. Start up a conversation. You might very well be the first black man they have ever been in close contact with. Excellent opportunity for you to dispel any myths.
Reporting someone who disagrees with you. Can kinda see why you are so popular at school.............

It is a select few people who are. Don't let the actions of a select few change who you are inside. You seem to be a very sincere person because regardless of how others have treated you, you still spoke to them and that speaks volumes.

don't worry about it dear it's like that most places but don't let it get you down..it's just apart of life..maybe they want raised around blacks and find it hard to mingle with one...considering your school is mostly white....it's not the race to blame but the people...blame them individually not the entire race....there will always be 50% that don't like you and the other 50 will....

It probably has nothing to do with your being black. Maybe you did something really screwy and everyone is avoiding you.
