It may or may not have anything to do with her "problem", but for the record, she is a Christian.

Her religion is irrelevant. So, sometimes, is sexual activity. Herpes spreads, USUALLY, from skin-to-skin contact, or direct contact with body fluids. A fleck of saliva from someone who has oral herpes could pass it. Since the virus will die quickly after leaving the human body, the eye exam equipment explanation is unlikely, although I suppose theoretically possible.

Herpes viruses can infect any mucus membrane on the human body, and sometimes, even, regular skin. The eyes, of course, like genitals, mouths and noses, contain mucus membranes.

Therefore... yes, of course it's possible to have a herpes eye infection. In fact, it happens often enough for there to be fairly well-known protocols to deal with it among health professionals. It's NOWHERE near as common as type 2 herpes, incorrectly labelled as "genital herpes," on either genitals or mouth. This has been estimated as occurring in one quarter of sexually active adults in the U.S. Type 1 herpes, incorrectly labelled as "oral herpes" or "cold sores," also gotten on either genitals or mouth, is estimated to be present in the bodies of 4 out of every 5 Americans, adult or sexually active or not, and showing an infection or not.

While eye infections are not common, they DO happen, and they can be DANGEROUS. It can threaten eyesight.

In EXTREMELY rare instances, herpes eye infections can be precoursers to the condition of encephalitis from the herpes virus, which can be fatal.

Your mother-in-law should seek professional medical attention immediately. And her religious views, or yours, should have no influence on how, or whether, she is treated. There are ways she could have contracted this infection without violating your religion's prohibitions against sex. That is not important now. What IS important that she be treated immediately and her eyesight be saved.

And leave truck drivers out of it. I'm an ex-Teamsters union member, and I'm trying to help YOU.

To Correct your Statement.... "She SAYS... she is a Christian!"

To be a Real Christian... One must be Born Again by the Spirit of GOD! See John 7:38-39 !

Herpes and the Many Varieties and more information about such can be found on the CDC.GOV site.

Where and How she got the Herpies Strain she has... has got to be Diagnosed Properly... BY A Medical Professional!

Any such other Diagnose is.... JUST... " PLAIN " and ... IGNORANT...... CONJECTURE!

Thanks for Asking ! RR

There are several types of herpes, and not all are sexually transmitted. Stop worrying about where she got it and worry about getting her medical care.
