her nose. What does this mean? Is it contagious?

2007-11-28 13:45:03 · 20 answers · asked by ~~Shelly~~ 2 in Pets Dogs

I guess I need to add. We had her in a large fenced in back yard. We have another boxer (her mother), but we have her tied up due to being in heat. I don't know anyone who would poison her or want to, nobody comes in our fence. I gave them both thanksgiving dinner leftovers that people did not eat. ( all was cooked and kept from being spoiled.)
The foam is not around the mouth or in the mouth, just a little poured out of her nose.
This is so horrible, I don't know what to tell my kids, they are so attached. "tears"

Im sorry. I have a 6 mo old boxer and I cannot imagine losing him. :(.

I am actually crying for you. I feel so bad for you.

I am not sure what the foam could be. Maybe it is just something that happens when they pass?

Ask the vet if you are curious.

If she wasnt up to date on the shots she may have had an infection and you just never knew.

With Boxers it is sometimes hard to tell if they are sick b.c they are so energetic even when they arent feeling well.

My poor little guy got Kennel Cough last month. We only knew from the cough. Other than that he was crazy as ever.

I am very sorry for your loss. Really I am.

Good luck with everything. My prayers are with you guys.

You did not give enough info but I can help with signs of poisoning. I had a golden retriever that someone lured out of our gated /fenced yard. He was found in the street so it didn't take long to kill him. The only thing he could move was his head. He urinated all over himself almost continuously. Some foam was coming out of his mouth. Try to remember if your dog was wet or dry on his coat. If you suspect poison it would be well worth the money to have a "autopsy" done. If you ever have seen an animal poisoned you would never forget the pain that the animal had to go through. The sad part is that these psychos are very seldom caught. The good thing is if they are caught they get more than a slap on the hand. Sorry that you and your family had to go through this. Please be careful with your other dog as they may come back after her.

Having lose pets of my own, I know how you feel - I'm sorry for your loss. While frothy foam could be an indication of poisoning, it is possible the the Boxer was bitten by a rabid animal or even a snake. At 6 months, he/she was still a puppy - full of curosity and wanting to play. Only an autopsy will tell you the exact cause.

I'm not sure what area of the country you are in, but I know that certain states have the Bofo Toad (we had them in Florida when I was there). They are highly poisonous, and if a dog licks them or tries to pick them up it can be deadly. All you will see is some foam and a dead dog, although I'm not sure if the foam would be in the nose or mouth. That is something to look up though!

I'm so sorry about your dog.

The foam could be many things. You didn't really give details of where you found her, but she could have eaten something like rat poison which would have killed her and caused the foam. But the foam really could be nothing-- when a dog has an empty stomach and vomits, foamy stuff comes out.

First i wonder why a dog is in a cage ? A dog learns nothing in a cage ? I would not have a dog if i found it was in the way / a dog should be part of all that goes on in a home ? it is called a family pet. lastly take the poor animal to the vet. I have no time for people who get a dog and tie it up stick it in a shed or cage

I am very sorry for your loss, I am sure you must be devastated. I don't have experience in this field, but I did want to try and help you, so I looked it up as best I could and found something that may be of interest to you.

It's called "Bloat, twisted stomach, gastric torsion" and the URL is:

http://www.gvsvet.com/glossaryMORE.asp?t=bloat

I'm not saying this is what it was, I'm just suggesting you read that and see if it sounds like it could be this. Only a necropsy can tell you for sure.

Also, you may want to check out this place called "Rainbow Bridge" at http://www.petloss.com/poems/maingrp/rainbowb.htm
It helped me get through the devastation of losing pets. I hope it can help you, and again, I'm very sorry for your loss.

I am sorry to hear about the loss of your puppy. Two things come to mind, 1st that your pup had something obstructing the airway, which is why you only saw the foamy substance coming out of her nose. on some occasions over zealous puppies do choke on toys, treats, sometimes, even their own food.
2nd, slug poison.
a necropsy is in fact your best bet
i doubt it is contagious
and please do not leave your female tied up outside when she is in heat. a female dog in heat should never, ever, be left unattended for even a moment.

It could have been parvo. Which is a virus that grows very rapidly. It is the most common cause of death in puppies. It attacks the lining of the digestive system. I had a puppy that had parvo and it had a foamy substance coming out of his nose and mouth. We got him to the vet in time but he said if we would have waited any longer he wouldn't have made it. It happend overnight.

First, I am sorry for your loss. You may want to consider having a necropsy (an animal autopsy) done to determine COD. It costs money, but it can tell you what killed your pet and if it's anything to be concerned about.

One possibility that I hate to even bring up: could she have been poisoned? Either accidentally or on purpose? It's horrible to consider. A necropsy will buy you peace of mind.
