if he is giving you lessons he expects you to suck at first --- just keep practising and as long as you are making a genuine effort then you wont embarrass yourself

It won't matter if the guy likes you too. Men like to feel stronger than the woman they're with, no matter what they say, so if he feels a little better than you (not in a demeaning sort of manner), then it makes him feel good in that relationship. I'm also not saying that you should try and be bad at guitar, just do what you can.
