Religious people are NOT more happy than nonreligious people in my opinion. I am agnostic, irreverent, and I do not attend church, but I am relatively as happy as anyone I know. Happiness is dependent upon the events -- joyful and tragic -- which one experiences in life; for some faith seems to support them through times of disaster, but for me, religion would not be the answer or solace. I am too much the skeptic to believe dogma of any sort.

Thats an interesting question and i don't know if there is really an answer but i have had many friends. Some who believe in a God and some who have not. Those who did not believe in a God seemed more down and just unhappier then my other friends. However some my friends who believe in a God don't attend any church and they seem happy but not as happy as those who are attending some kind of church once a week. But they are happier then those who believe in nothing.

The people around here always comment on how happy I am. I think I am happier, even though life may not be any easier.

yes. when your religious, you have the comfort of God.
but when you do not, you are only happy when good things happen.
in history, many societies use religion to prevent the poor from rousing up. having a religion allows the poor to not complain as much because they know, as long as they're good, they will prosper in the future.
if there was no religion, there is no future hope when something bad happens, and therefore the poor would have caused more revolutions and your history grade would be an F because you cannot remember so many different revolutions.
point is, no religion = more sad when something does not go your way

They like to think so. like there is a missing part of you for not believing in their faith.
As for me. i am very happy without being a religious person. i even believe in god, but not religion. i have a beautiful wife and great people all around me, none of them goto church.
Yes religion was a good control system for the poor in old times. i aggree wholey there, that was for the mostpart the reason.
Even constantine saw christianity as a measure to bring the roman empire into line. thats why he declared christianity was not to be persecuted.

It has been said that life is a comedy for those who think, and a tragedy for those who feel.
Happiness cannot be divided down religious lines.

i have been both and i can emphatically say that i am happier without religion. no more freaking out about hell, no more worrying about the imaginary man in the sky watching me masturbate, no more guilt over trivial things. it's refreshing.
