I'm from Australia and taking my first skiing trip in February to Whistler, Canada. Never having really been to the snow before I'm wondering what type of shoes are appropriate to wear while walking in the snow?

Unless you plan to do some snowshoeing, a good pair of insulated snow clogs or slip-ons should be fine. Salomon and Merrell make many styles and are very popular. Other companies make them, (Lands End, LL Bean, Eddie Bauer, Keen, Teva...)

Salomon have the best traction. That's what I use. My wife has a pair from Land's End. They are very warm.

If you are planning to get out in the snow and away from the plowed and shovels streets and sidewalks, then Chilikats or something similar from The North Face are a great choice. Columbia makes some similar boots as does LL Bean. All of these are similar to Sorel boots, just not as heavy and bulky.

you're not going to be trecking it through a foot of snow or anything, we have roads and plows. You're going to a resort...you'll be skiing, you don't need to worry about walking through all the powder in shoes. Shoes are for the lodge and sidewalks etc. My friends and I get out almost everyday and we all leave in skate shoes as we barely wear shoes at the resort, mostly just ski boots.

any boot with good tread-if your old hikers are warm down abit you might want to invest in a new pair
ps: although the village at w/b loves to brag about being "green" they're notorious for the amount of rocksalt they use on the sidewalks so coat your new boots with alot of silicone or they'll get ruined
