I am interested in joining a law enforcement agency in San Diego. For my age (20), they make decent amount of money, and i always thought of joining the military, but the whole "Iraq War" discouraged me...

Anyways, i was wondering if anyone knew any resources i could use to help determine what agency i should look into, or if anyone has any expereinces or advice.

Front runners are SDPD, and CHP. SDPD because i would like to work Elusively in San Diego, and i can continue to go tho school at night, while attending police academy in the morning. But i hear as a city cop you mostly deal with ghetto ppl, junkies, and domestic violence. CHP because, like previously stated, i was interested in military and they say their more military-style.

I also hear theres money to be made in Customs, or Border Patrol, not really into Sheriff's...

ok... any information/advice is welcomed.
thank you.

If you like to punish people, go for SDPD... if you feel sorry for the unfortunate, be a fireman. If you like hunt and chase, the CHP. Any of these can get you killed, obviously. You inadvertently wrote "Elusively". Could be you wanted to elude the war. War here is just as bad, just the conditions may be worse in Iraq or wherever you are sent. Some of our residents don't mind killing their opponents.

Having worked at both a Sheriff's Dept & a City Police Dept and having numerous friends who are with the CHP I can assure you that they are not "more military-style". The CHP Officers are Traffic Enforcement officers, with a few exceptions they are strictly accident investigators, traffic enforcement and DUI enforcement. In rural areas they regularly assist the local PD's & SO's but for the most part, they are traffic only. Most of the "real crime" arrests they make get handed off to local PD's & SO's. It does depend on the area and the Station Commander, but "cooperation" with other Agencies is encouraged for this.

Also, the vast majority of CHP rookies go from the Academy to either los Angeles or to the Sacramento/San Francisco area. Again, exceptions are made but you don't get to pick your first assignment and it can last many years. You won't get assigned to a SD area Station just because you want to.

As for going to school at night while being in a full time Academy, it just isn't going to happen. My Academy ran from 6:50 AM until 7 PM or later. There are also night classes and night practicals as the Academy gets closer to the end. I barely had time to eat, drop off/pick up my Academy uniforms at the cleaners, shine my shoes and gear & study......don't even get me started on sleep. 5 hours was a LONG night's sleep for me.

Good luck and do some ride alongs. Don't discount the Sheriff's Dept either, they are very diverse and offer a lot of opportunities as well as keeping you in the SD area.

The CHP is primarily traffic safety and enforcement, you will spend the majority of your time on the interstate taking accidents and making traffic stops.

The SDPD will be more dimensional. I'm not too sure the account of ghettos, junkies, and domestics is accurate. You will have plenty of other contacts also.

I'm guessing the SDPD issues assignments by seniority, and the less senior people get the less desireable areas of town. that could be where that account came from. If that is the case, it will be temporary, and I'm sure you will be able to post of other areas before too long.

Try calling the agency and ask about the ride-along program, if they have the program that is, that should help narrow your choice, CHP and SDPD are both good choices, but which one sticks out at you more. Cops don't necessarily deal with "ghettos" people, junkies and domestic violence all the time, its different everyday, you meet good people too.

Join the San Diego Police Department and be assigned at the Intelligence Section so that you can be an agent to go to school undetected.
